6 players in each Grid, counter pressing. Ideal size is 30 meters (90 feet) long and 20 meters (60 feet) wide. Depending on skill of each team this grid can be smaller or larger. 6v6 in this activity, and could be played 5v5 or 4v4 depending on number of players
Object: players in each grid attempt possession, while 2 players from the other team counter press, and attempt to win the ball or close down the other team from possession. The emphasis is on the team that lost the ball to win it back. If the 2 counter press players can win the ball, they can pass it back to their team of 4 in their grid, while the other team now counter presses and attempts to win the ball. If the counter pressing players cannot gain possession but stops possession in any way (ball goes out of the grid) , the Coach will pass the ball into their grid to enjoy possession. This activity is fast moving, and requires thinking of positions and readiness to always win the ball back.
Coaching Points:
-Understanding of role of presser, support player, and the balance and depth of the other 4 players that remain in their Grid
-emphasis on the speed of pressing and the closest players to the half line being the pressers
-Presser cutting off one lane of passing, so possession players have less options, leaving the support player anticipating where that ball will be passed, cutting off the middle lane and ready to move in on the one pass outlet.
-Ability for presser and support to "double team" on a player with possession should their back be facing them, or the player does not have control of ball. Anticipating when you can close out together.
-near end of the activity coach may bring in 3 players to press, with the emphasis on winning the ball within a certain time frame under 10 seconds, and they regain possession and pass back to their team
-if the counter pressers are not gaining success, the grid can be made smaller, more players can enter, or possesion players could take two touches on ball first (stopping the speed of one touch passes)
