Hockey Session (Under 18s): Passing and Moving

Pass and Move with defender (10 mins)

Piggy in the middle

Players 1, 2 and 3 try to pass the ball across the square while player 4 tries to get a defensive touch on the ball (disrupt)

Players are allowed to move around the outside of the square to open side to receive a pass or they can carry the ball away from the defender. 

If defender gets a touch on the ball, they change with the player who passed the ball

Focus on defenders positioning themselves to disrupt any clear passes, encourage defenders to keep the head of their stick on the ground, keep body angled to get the pass onto the front stick and try to protect their left foot. 

UPGRADE: if defender intercepts the ball, they need to try dribble the ball outside the square while the other players can try to tackle the ball back

2 vs 1 into 2 vs 2 (15 mins)

Set-Up: 

• Players are divided into 2 groups with each group in their attacking 30
• Each 30 will be divided into half (A & B)

 Instructions: 2 vs 1 

• Player 1 passes the ball to the defender in white (D1), defender in white passes it to Player 2
• 2 vs 1 starts - Attackers' goal is to score on the keeper, defenders' aim to get the ball through the gates on the side. 
• Defenders complete 2 rounds before switching. Attackers change after each round.
• Alternate sides

Modifications:

• This can happen in any area of the field.
• 2 vs 2 option with the 2nd defender being activated once P2 receives the pass.
• Goalie Involvement - Have defenders start with a shot on goal before starting the 2 vs 1
• 2 vs 2 option with the 2nd defender being activated once P2 receives the pass.
