Description

Integrated session with GK, fullbacks, wingers, striker and CAM

Discussion Points for GK:

- Technical Information in possession i.e. distribution and out of possession i.e. dealing with crosses

- Positioning realistic to area ball is in (Play game not drill); small readjustments constantly

- Decision making- attack the cross or drop off? Choice of technique?

- When to be open/ square to cross and what triggers can we identify that may change this?

Discussion Points for Attackers:

- Creativity and decision making i.e. choice of technique/ type of run

- Identifying triggers to time runs i.e. winger going inside creating space wide, crossing player shifting ball out of feet

- What attacking runs can you make from your position? What are the benefits of different runs? i.e. striker running to front post to drag CB forward and create space for opposite winger at back post

- Use of blind side runs to gain advantage over opponent

- Double movements to create a yard of space in congested areas i.e. around 6 yard box

Wide Crossing and Finishing Technical Practice

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 2 Fullbacks (Can represent advanced fullback or winger when out of possession)
  • 1 CB/ CDM who become Striker and CAM out of possession

Instructions/Explanations:

  • GK moves to support full back and receive back pass; GK can then switch play to opposite full back (around) who becomes winger or into CDM (through) who then plays to winger
  • When winger receives ball they play unopposed cross for GK to influence
  • GK then passes through to CAM who can combine with striker for shot on goal

Progression(s)

  • Striker can attack cross/ apply passive pressure on GK
  • Full backs start narrower and deeper (becoming CB). Cross then becomes a cut back scenario as opposed to wide cross
  • CAM can support winger for deeper cross

Crossing Scenarios from Overlapping fullback

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • Set up with Winger and full back pairing (i.e. left side), 1 striker and CAM and GK
  • Mannequins to manipulate a compact back 4 that are out of possession
  • Flags to represent deep CB (Encourage striker to run across defenders or peel off)

Instructions/Explanations:

  • GK starts with ball at goal kick and distributes to area where right winger would be (this is intercepted by opposition left back)
  • Left back quickly drills ball to LW who cuts inside (triggering overlap by leaving wide space for full back to advance)
  • Winger slips ball through gap between full back and CB for left back to cross; striker and CAM attack cross realistically

Progression(s)

  • Work opposite sides
  • Winger can play into striker who may find advancing full back with first time pass round the corner or link with CAM
  • Winger can play into CAM who can strike or combine further with striker or winger i.e. 3rd man run in behind from striker for first time pass through by CAM
  • Additionally start some reps with ball beginning at full back and inverted winger to suit AFCL style of play

Crossing Scenarios from Underlapping Fullback

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 1 GK, 1 FB, 1 Winger, 1 CAM, 1 striker
  • Back 4 mannequins shift across defending wide play
  • Flags to encourage intelligent movement by striker and CAM when attacking crosses

Instructions/Explanations:

  • GK distributes to opposition left back (i.e. hitting their own right winger)
  • LB plays to winger who then plays into CAM who has dropped into pocket to receive ball
  • As this happens LB continues with underlapping 3rd man run between opposition full back and CB
  • CAM can play through for full back to cross for striker (CAM continue to support by arriving late one edge of 18 yard box for pull back)

Progression(s)

  • Work same reps from opposite side
  • Winger plays to striker who holds up then plays round corner for underlapping full back
  • Winger plays to striker who links up with CAM to find underlapping full back
