Welsh Way Principles - Playing through / around / over
Understand when and how to playthrough, around or over the
Block 1: breaking lines in the wide areas
Block 2: breaking lines centrally and playing in between the 2 CBs
Block 3: checking understanding
Organisation / Area Size
half field
tapered ends
Play 8 v 8 + 2 GKs
Formation
Yellows- being managed - in a GK-4-3-1 representing a 4-3-3
Blues- being coached in a GK 1-5-2 representing 3-5-2
Problem 1 breaking lines in the wide areas
Solution: the number 8 and 10 making runs in between the wing back and the centre back, as an underlapping run alongside the striker making a run to the near post with the 6 picking up the vacant space left.
Problem 2 breaking lines centrally using ours 2 strikers.
Wingers staying wide on to the touch line with the heels on the sideline and the umber 9 pinning the striker back one on the inside and one on the outside shoulders of the defenders with the 10 making the run in between the cb while the 6 picks up the space in the ball and the cb moves forward into the 6 hole.
Roles and responsibilities
CB making sure when the 6 moves up they fill the hole that is left
Number 6 when the number 8 and 10 underlap they fill the space that is left and is used to switch the play
Number 8 and 10- underlapping between the full back and cb once the ball is wide
Wing backs staying wide and can break the line inside with a dribble
Number 9s - pinning the 2 CB back and changing between inside shoulder and outside shoulder depending on where the ball is

Specific Practice (35 mins)
In Possession Red -GK- 2xCB - 2XCM - 1x CF (3-5-2 based formation),
Out of Possession Blue - GKP - 2xCB - 2X CM - 1xCF (3-5-2 based formation).
Initially CF's start in the middle third and can only enter Middle and Final thirds.
Other Players are able to move freely, although must reset during goal kicks and other resets.
Reds - LCB's and RCB push up to the middle third as the football travels forward towards the final third - acting as support players for breaking lines.
Red - Goal Keeper to use halfway line and the halfway circle edge (as illustrated) as markers for their positioning in respect to the position of the football and pressure applied.
Red - DM to act as support player for breaking lines and also encouraged to break into the final third where possible to create overloads with the attacking players.
Session Details
The aim of the session is for the Blue team to be able to play out from the back and break lines preferably through or around the pressure.
Reds are all encouraged to act as support and push through the thirds as a team, with advancing midfield runs from the 6,8.
If the Blue team wins the football, they look to counter and score in in 8-10 seconds.
When the football is in the centre third the blue Team LCCB and RCB should be providing support from behind, 6 and 8 making third man runs to provide space as well as passing channels playing one twos where possible and whilst the DM acts as a pivot.
The football always starts with the Blue team goalkeeper who passes around to the CB (or through to the DM) to begin the practice. The Blue team must then look to pass the football through the thirds and their target is to score in the blue goals.
Block One - Focusing on goalkeepers passing - 1. Pass Around 2. Play / Pass Through, based upon the pressure applied
Example of Passing Through - Can the Goalkeeper recognise other passing options for example playing and into the Number 5 midfielder (who will drop to receive the pass on the half turn).
B. Block Two - Goalkeeper can now also pass Beyond / Over.
Example - Diagonal Cross the space around the Number 9.
