Technical Drill - Maintaining possession in traffic

Technical Drill - 15 minutes

Players Involved: 10

Area Size - 35 x 25 yards

  • 2 balls are in play
  • Both teams look to keep possession by passing and moving the ball around the area as a team.
  • Both teams will partake in the drill within the same box.
  • Players are not trying to tackle the opposition

Adaptations

 

Progressions

  • Touching or passing the ball with the weaker foot
  • Each player can only be passed to once before the whole team has a touch of the ball.

Regressions

  • Players can use a minimum of 3 touches
  • Split the area so each team has their own side to practice before returning to sharing a complete area.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

  • Can players move the ball with the correct passing strategy (weight of pass, distance, body position).
  • Are players moving into appropraite space to provide a passing option.
Interventions

 

  • Bullseye - mechanics (Body position, receiving the pass, placing foot in front of ball, weight of pass).
  • Concurrent -  identify both strengths & weaknesses in technique of receiving the ball and passing. 

 Rest - 2 minutes

Skill Drill - 4(+2) vs 4 Possession

Skill Drill - 25 minutes 

Players Involved: 10 (8 outfielders & 2 bounce players)

Area Size: 35 x 25 yards

  • Only 1 ball is in play
  • 1 player from each team steps outside the grid (opposite side to each other) to become bounce players. Bounce players support the attacking team.
  • This creates a 6 vs 4 possession drill.
  • Aim for the attacking team is to use their team and the bounce players to move the ball around the area, keeping possession of the ball.
  • Aim for the defending team is to intercept or tackle the ball from the attackers.
  • If the attacking team lose the ball, they will become the defending team, and the defending team becomes the attacking team.

Adaptations  

Progressions

  • Players are allowed to make a maximum of 2 touches.
  • A player can't recieve a pass twice in a row.
Regressions
  • First pass is free
  • Defenders can't tackle a player on the ball, only intercept/block.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

  • Are players creating space within the area by moving around the area.
  • Are players using the correct weight of pass.
  • Communication between players for making passing options and supporting the on-ball player
Interventions
  • Freezes - Patterns in attack, positioning, creating space.
  • Walkthrough - Movement off the ball, passing into space.

Small Sided Game

Small Sided Game - 13 minutes (2 minutes break in-between)

 Anaerobic or Aerobic? - Anerobic 

Players involved: 10 (6 outfielders & 2 bounce players) 

Area Size: 35 x 25 yards 

 

Drill: 

  • 5 vs 5
  • The game will start with the ball being played in to a player. 
  • To score 1 point, a team must move the ball from their half to the other and then score. 
  • For 2 points, a team must make 5 passes to each other, anywhere on the pitch, before scoring.
  • If the ball is out of play, even if the last touch is from a defender, the defending team will have the next possession.
  • Once scoring, possession is swapped, starting with a pass from the bouncer on their side. 

Adaptations

 Progressions  

  • 3 touches maximum on the ball per player.
  • 5 passes have to be made in the opposition half only before shooting or passing to the bounce player.
  • Teams can score in either goal 

Regressions  

  • When in the attackers have the ball in their own half, the defenders can't tackle the on-ball player, only intercept a pass attempt or heavy touch.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:  

  • When in possession, teams should be using an appropriate amount of players based on the environment. 
  • Communication between players for calling for the ball and making space. 
  • Teams should look to use both long and short passing to keep possession of the ball. 
  • Are the defending team making it difficult for the attackers to keep possession.

Interventions

  • Freezes - Positioning, passing options, creating space.
  • Walkthrough - Passing patterns, 1-2 passing.
  • Concurrent  - Good/Bad weight of pass, Body position
