Circle Defence & Frontal Pressure (40 mins)
Organisation
Half-Pitch game with a counter-attack line 5 yards into the half (red line in the diagram above).
Attacking team has Back 4 plus 3 strikers in the circle.
Defending team has 2 pressing players, a spare defender, and 3 marking defenders in the circle.
Phases start with a ball in the back 4. Play sets of 10 balls and rotate players as appropriate to your circumstances (numbers etc.)
Rules/Scoring
The attacking side must start each phase with all 4 players in Zone 1.
The attacking side must keep at least 3 players in Zone 1 at all times.
Attackers score 1 point if they can deliver the ball into the D from outside the 23m line.
Attackers score 1 point for a goal.
If the defending side regain posession in the 23m area they kill the phase by getting the ball under control over the 23m line. If they regain posession in Zone 1 they kill the phase by getting the ball under control over the counter attack line (red line on the diagram.)
They score a point for every time they successfully do the above.

Coaching Points
Back 4 - Shape, outletting skills, promoting FB or HB's, footwork to reposition
Front 3 - Leading (timing etc.) receiving skills, goalscoring skills.
Pressing Players - Positioning and line speed to get pressure to the ball and deny passes into the circle
Circle Defence - Dominating space/opponents, marking positions etc.
Spare Defender - Protecting the space between the 2 pressing players, picking up and Back 4 players leading through.
