MDG (10 minutes)

Set up- Multi Directional Game (MDG)

Pitch to be marked 20 x 20 or 25 x 25 depending on age group, using the centre of the pitch to create realism.

Defending team has 2 players (Blue)

Attacking team has 3 players (Red)

2 feeders (Red)

Equipment

16 cones

7 players

Bibs- 2 sets (5 attackers and 2 defenders)

8+ balls

Objective

The defending team (blues) need to work as a unit to deny attacking movement, restrict space and time and succeed in winning the ball. To deal with the potential of a 2 v 1 overload. If possesion is won then the defenders can score in any of the four goals.

Key coaching points

Compactness

Distance between players no more than 8 yards

Communication

Movement as a unit

Body position (Show inside or force back)

Restrict time on the ball for the attackers.

Disciplined out of possession

When to press and type of press

Progression

Defenders- Once the ball is regained, defenders make 3 passes before a goal

Attackers- Must use the number 10. All 3 players to have a touch to increase speed of play and switiching play.

MDG (Problem)

Game Model/Welsh Way Principle - Breaking the lines (Out of possesion). Press and Force play to supporting players.

What- Red server feeds ball to Red 10. On that trigger point Defending team (blue) look to regain possesion and finish into either of the goals.

How- 1 server (Red) either end. Attacking 3 v 2 Defenders in centre of the pitch (Game realism).

Problem 1 - Defender becomes isolated by the attacking 10, How does defending 4 react around the ball.

Solution 1- Movement around the ball. But as a unit. Keep the distance between both screening players to at least 8-10 yards. The attackers may look to switch play to try and break the line. Rotate the press of blue 8 and 4. So for example if blue 8 presses high, blue 4 covers and vice versa.

Problem 2- Space between attackers open up. Creating potential switiching of play, trying to break the line.

Solution 2- Drop off to invite the pressure slightly. Dont be dragged into a potential trap, remain disciplined around and away from the ball. Once they advance forward look to force away from the target players. BE PATIENT.

Detail- Look at body shape of both players, body position of pressing player is key to where the play will be forced.

Blues to remain compact, consistently talking to protect shaded area. When to close down and when to stay as a unit. If they start to split we are vulnerable for a central attack. Continuous communication is key.

Body positions, speed of press, pressing wide.

There will be times where we are overloaded. Remain disciplined.

Things to look out for:

Transition from defence into attack if the ball is won - are the twin screen leaving gaps that can become vulnerable if we loose possession?

Twin screen becoming split due to wide play - can we stay compact while forcing the ball out wide?

What ifs?

What if blue 8/4 doesnt close and allows player inside? Does the covering player's distance enable them to transfer?

What if the ball is being fed out wide? - Shuffle across? early press?

What if attackers try to play a long ball through the middle to the 10? - Can we intercept? Can we gain seconds? Can we cover runners?
