Specific Practice - Overlapping False 9
The ball starts with the number 6 (hybrid defender/midfielder). All throughout the practice players for the red team are instructed to try and identify the overload in the center of the pitch when the number 9 drops in.
Yellows are allowed to defend how they choose but to try and keep their shape.
Specific build up
Red always have 2 spare players outfield. It is crucial they are patient in the build up and try to find a spare player. The Red 9 is the player in focus and they try to make an overload in the midfield by dropping in.
It is crucial the Red 6 makes the field big by staying deep and not crowding the midfield when the Red 9 drops in.
When the Red 9 drops in Red Wingers 7 and 11 must recognise the space left by their fellow attacker and look to occupy the 2 CB's. Wingers are encouraged to interchange positions in this scenario.
Red 9 still needs to make an attacking run once the play develops and the ball reaches the box and musn't 'sit' still in midfield.
Creating and exploiting the overload considerations
When and how to exploit a numerical advantage
Find the spare player
Player movement to create the overload
Interchange positions
Commit the opponent
Ball speed
Yellow Team considerations
If yellows are able to win the ball back they must try to play out from the back and score in the goals on the halfway line.
If the yellows win the ball back can they find a spare player? Can their full backs make their own attacking runs and progress the ball by dribbling? Can the CB's help to make their own overload by stepping into midfield?
Defending the overload
Recognise opposition movement
Press quickly

Leave the furthest players

What if? - Number 1
What if a yellow CB comes with the Red 9 and man marks them as they drop into midfield?
Solution
The red team must identify and see this happening. They must instantly recognise that is space in behind the CB's and make a well timed run into the space.
Red's must supplement this good attacking play with a well weighted through ball.

What if? - Number 2
What if a yellow midfielder identifies the Red 9 dropping in and man marks them.
Solution
The reds must identify this and recognise the Red 10 takes up the role of the Red 9 and is the spare man between the lines. The reds should aim to find whoever is spare.

17 players needed - 1-2-3-3 for reds vs 1-4-2-2 Narrow for Yellows. Goalkeepers needed for each team.
Throw in's are allowed. There are no corners but the team that has the throw in can take it from where they choose but the throw-in must be taken within 6 seconds for realism.
Players are allowed to play and then a terminal break will be delivered with key information as to what can be improved.

Initial Set Up - Specific Practice
Specific session plan - Creating and Exploiting Overloads - False 9
15 players needed - 3,2,3 for reds vs 1,4,2 for yellows (including GK)
KEY FOCUS - Can the 9 become a 'false 9' and drop into midfield and create an overload in the middle of the pitch? Can the wingers recognise that and look to become inside forwards and occupy the 2 yellow CB's? Can the fullbacks recognise there is space being left on the wings and try to provide the width?
The reds are considered successful if they can find ANY player in between the lines of the midfield and defence with time and space.
If the yellows win the ball back they can score in the two mini goals at the halfway line.
