Defending the Switch of Play - SSG
Organisation
Blue Team: 4-3-3 (1-4-3-0) Coached
Red Team: 3-5-2 (1-0-5-2)
Scenarios
Problem: Attacking team switching the play through a central striker dropping in?
Solution: Nearest player applies pressure and the unit moves together. Stay compact & leave the furthest player. Midfielders play on the inside shoulders of the CM's encouraging the play wide. Force wide players down the line
Attacking Team (Red):
Utilize wide zones.
Encourage quick switches of play to challenge defensive compactness.
Managed by the coach to focus on creating overloads in wide areas.
Encourage midfielders to player higher and wider
Defending Team (Blue):
Must maintain a compact defensive shape and screen central passing lanes.
Prioritize forcing play wide and blocking switches of play.
Key Coaching Points (Defending Team - Blue)
Ball side, goal side: Stay between your opponent and the goal.
Marking distance: Stay close enough to apply pressure but not too tight to be beaten.
Defensive Shape: If one defender steps out, the remaining shift to stay compact, maintaining good distances. If full-Back is beaten then Center-Back steps in, CM tucks into the CB position and opposite full-Back recovers inside. If Opponent Cuts Inside then Central Midfielder provides cover.
Conditions:
Play always restarts from either GK.
Can blue team score within 8 seconds of regaining the ball

Defending the Switch of Play - Specific Practice
Organisation
Blue Team: 4-3-3, (no 7, 9, 10, 11) Coached Team
Red Team : 3-5-2, (no 3, 4, 5)
Scenarios
Problem: Attacking team uses the 6 to switch the play.
Solution: Nearest defender pressures the ball quick & aggressively. Stay compact as a team and leave the furthest player. Far side CM to defend half and half & force 6 to play backwards
What ifs
1. The 8 makes a run behind the FB in the channel
1. CM to follow runner / or pass onto CB and CM to tuck into the CB position ensuring 3 at the back at all times.
2. The opposition play over the heads of our compact CM's to the opposition far side CM?
2. Only ball side CM to lock on and press aggressively while far side CM to play half and half anticipating the pass to the 6 or ball over the top to press in attempt to delay whilst team regains defensive shape.
