Organization:
20' X 20' area, (size of area may vary).
Equipment needed:
pinnies, soccer balls & cones to mark the outside of the area.
Explanation:
Rondo is designed with a focus on a third man concept, building into the up-back-through action.
Split the players into teams of 3.
4 players, 2 of each color of the in possession team, will be playing in the outside as depicted in this graphic. With different colors on opposite sides.
The remaining 2 players will move freely inside, marked by the 3 defenders.
The constraint included in this rondo is the players in possession can only pass to the opposite color.
If one of the defenders recovers the ball, or forces a mistake, they will switch with the team that is responsible for the unsuccessful action.
In order to encourage the in possession team to make a central combination pass between their teammates, make a restriction that if this happens the defensive team would again need to win the ball twice to switch.
1 possible outcome when breaking the lines would be the up-back-through combination.
Coaching points:
Communication
decision-making
execution
Defensive recognition:
If a ball is played through the defenders from one side to the other, twice, the defensive team will then have to win the ball twice.
This rule promotes the principal of not always trying to play forwards and not just passing for the sake of passing.
