This lesson plan is a model lesson to help your team understand the concepts and ideas of COUNTER-PRESSING. It is important to understand that in order to counter-press, a team must first be building with its appropriate receiving lines. Encourage team to win the ball back in the first 3-5 seconds (2 closest players step to the ball, remaining players find a man). Counter-pressing is also about energy! Command a certain level of work-rate from your players!

4v2 Rondo
- Attacking 4 players must possess the ball for as long as possible
- Defending 2 players are looking to win the ball and dribble outside of the square
- 3 outside attacking players may only be on the outside sides of the square (unless possession is lost)
Progression #1 - Add 1 attacker and 1 defender to create a 5v3
Coaching Observations/Points
1) Once possession is lost, can we apply immediate pressure by the first (closest) defender
2) Remaining players should be encourage to give cover, as well as mark up remaining attackers
3) Win the ball back immediatly (3-5 seconds)

6v7 - Counter-Press in the Attacking 1/3
- Ball starts from coach, who plays ball into attacking team
- 6 attackers look to get a shot or scoring opportunity
- 7 defenders look to win the ball and score on either of the counter goals
Coaching Observations/Points
1) Once possession is lost, can we double down on the ball to win it back
2) Closest 2 players step to the ball, surrounding players find a man to MARK
3) If possession is not won in the first 3.5 seconds, players will need to drop into their block

Who? 6v6 or 8v8 game (both teams playing 3-2-3)
Size? Full Size Field (50X80yds)
Play? 2X12 min games, with 2 min rest between games
Looking for opportunities to coach the Counter Press, once POSSESSION IS LOST.
If team is counter attacking, it is NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE to counter -press (do not have the numbers or the correct spacing). Counter Attack = Block & Build = Counter-Press

Progression #1 -- 1 Attacker, 2 Defenders
Progression #2 -- 1 Attacker, 3 Defenders
Coaching Points
1) Closest player applies immediate pressure
2) Communication is KEY ("I got pressure" , "no turn", "win it", etc.)
3) Make play predictable (Force ball into trap or cover)
