1v1 warm up

Essence:

- Quick movements into a 1v1.

Structure:

- The players with both feet jump over the halfway line 10 times. Then they sprint to the 25 (run in opposite directions)

- Whoever gets the ball first will attack and the other defend.

Technical Points:

- When defending we stay in a low body position with staggered feet.

- If you know you're getting their first position attack the space and don't run into directly into contact.

- If you know you're getting their second look to slow them down and apply pressure without diving in.

Flat triangle, defensive positioning

Essence:

- To work on gaining a better ball body goal line position.

Structure:

- Create a yellow strip line 2 yards in front of the penalty spot.

- Put 2 tyres or a similar box/end zone near the edge of the 25.

- Both the players on the 25 yard line will be passing the ball to each other until the pass becomes available to the attack. (For the fluidity of the exercise, allow maximum 5 passes)

- The defender has to stand on an angle so she can see the passer and the attacker when they move.

- If the defender intercepts the ball she can try to score in the tyres. Once she picks the ball all 3 players can join to stop her and then attack if they win the ball.

Technical Points:

- For the defender, it is really important that they stand on an angle to see both the passers and the attacker. The reason for this is so that she can have split vision to make an interception.

- Get them to understand the different pivots depending on where the ball and attacker is.

- The blue line represents the flat triangle. Use visual demonstrations to highlight this along with the split vision.

Defensive positioning and tackling

Essence:

- Work on the ball/gain line using pressure and patience principles.

Structure:

- Set up zone as pictured, make sure you have an angled zone in order to work on footwork and ball/gain line principle.

- 3 attackers one in each goal, coach feeds the ball to one of them. The defender will step out and try to win the ball applying the principles. All 3 attackers go before we swap the defender out.

- The attackers need to try and score in the mini goal and the defender has to win the ball and clear it.

Technical Points:

- Ball to body goal line, always stand on this line.

- Footwork, body should be on an angle to get them to channel into the sideline and away from the goal/ Footwork should be quick and pivoting to move if they move.

- Pressure, the pressure should be applied but not in diving in. Instead be around 1.5-2.5 metres away dependent on their speed. Apply patience and wait for them to make a mistake before you go and create the tackle. maybe they will make a mistake and lose the ball or you tackle them.

- Timing in making tackles is key.

Variation:

- Add an extra defender and work on holding the player up for a teammate to come back and create a 2v1.

- After the first one the player who ran in, stays in to hold up whilst the other player has to run to the opposite cone before being active > make it continuous.

Attack/defence in and around the circle

Essence:

- To improve the players communication, vision, decision making and elimination skills.

Structure:

- There are 6 gates around the circle (2 red, yellow and blue) These gates are 1 and half yards apart.

- The drill requires a minimum of 7 players and 1 keeper.

- The coach is at the top of the circle 3-5 yards from the top.

- The coach will hit the ball towards the keeper.

- The keeper will rebound the ball to pass the ball to the player in the centre by the penalty spot.

- The coach then shouts a colour and this indicates which gate that player needs to drive through. Both gates are active and the players on them work in a 2v1 to win the ball and put the ball on target with a shot.

- If the player in the centre drives the ball through a gate they get a free, uncontested shot on goal.

Variations:

- If you think the players are good enough with the verbal shout. Lift up a coloured cone and that becomes the active one. Progress from verbal to visual.

- If its too easy for the defenders use spare players to make it a 2v2.

- You could also advance this further and reduce the space b holding up 2 colours so 4 players on the gate become active. This also increases the number of attackers parallel.

Technical Points:

Attacking:

- The player by the penalty spot, make sure she is facing the goal before and during the hit of the ball towards the keeper.

- Make sure the second she receives the ball she is facing outwards to see which gates she needs to attack (if you use visual learning)

- Make the player  aware of where the space is and which gate is free.

Defending the gates:

- If they recognise that the attacker is heading to one gate, the other defender can jump in to create a 2v1 instead of a 1v1.

- The second the gate players win the ball, try to score with a short grip hit to reduce the time the keeper has to be ready. Furthermore, they could look for the second player to be on a post for a deflection.

Goal keeper:

- Make sure that they are constantly communicating with the attacking player, telling them which gate to attack at the beginning and which gate is free during the attack.

Attack vs Defence

Essence:

- To get the attackers used to posting up in the circle or away from the circle with pressure from defenders.

Structure:

- 4 defenders start within the strips and can only move once player A has passed the ball to B.

- The three attackers on the left can only move once A has passed the ball but they need to touch the strips before they can become active and receive the ball from B.

- One defender needs to step out and put pressure on B.

- If the defender wins the ball they need to pass back to A.

Technical Points:

- A point for everybody is that they should all be low and mobile in the circle ready to pick the ball, deflect it or be ready for a rebound.

Attacking:

- After 5 minutes bring them in and discuss with the attackers what they can do to make more space from the defender with them and what kind of runs they can do.

- If there is no keeper present get them to shoot early and make sure we have a player in a defection zone. If a keeper is present we need a player/players to be ready for the rebound.

- After 15 minutes, talk about how player B can make the teams job easier. If she moves slower she gives her teammates more time to get to the strips and post into areas. If she goes to quick she gets into danger with a defender and makes the attackers job harder.

Defending:

- The player who steps out wants to force her into the corner and down the line as opposed to inwards to the circle.

- PALM 2 (pressure, aggression, low, mobile and 2 hands on the stick) use this principle.

- After 15 minutes ask the players how they can set up to make their job easier, do they want to front mark or man mark, or do they want one person to cover the ball to goal line. Get them to discuss.

Turnover game

Essence:

- Put into practice the techniques we have trained.

Structure:

- Set up cones on an angle so they can dribble through them.

- If the defending team dribble through the cones they can turn and immediately attack the circle.

Technical Points:

- Focus on defending in pairs

- Attacking while making combinations and movement to create passes and overloads.

- Quick shots when in the circle.
