Ball Mastery (10 mins)

Method:

  • Ball each. Dribbling around the area. Using all parts of the foot (6 parts).
  • Coach calls different tasks; toe taps, in between feet (tick tocks or penguins), step overs,turn, stop etc. 
  • Give the actions a number. e.g. Toe taps = 1, in between feet = 2,  Leave ball and run to outside of grid then come back and get a different ball = 3, drag back with studs = 4. Sole Roll (sideways with studs) = 5. Then call number instead
  • Coach shouts GO & players run out around cones and back in to get a different ball
  • Coach shouts different part of the body and player must touch ball with it. e.g. Knee, bum, head, nose etc

Fun Element: Queen Of The Ring 

  • Players must try kick other players ball outside the area, while protecting their own ball
  • If ball knocked out of area, player leaves the area
  • Last person with a ball is the Queen of the Ring
  • Coach can send players back into the area to try get other players balls

Coaching Points:

  • Building on previous weeks moves. Can players remember numbers.
  • Can the player use all (6) parts of the foot to control the ball. 
  • Use studs to stop ball quickly on the call.
  • Different types of turn - V, Cruyf, drag back, step overs, scissors etc.
  • Player must get their head up, so they don't bang into other players. This is an introduction to scanning.

B lays back to A

A pass to C

C lays back to B

B lays in front of C

C dribbles back to group

B moves to spare cone

    C must stay on side by holding run (before cone) until pass made. Run onto pass and shoot


    Coaching Points:

  • Open body shape
  • Movement away from cone
  • Control using back foot
  • Good weight and accuracy of pass
  • Communication - Verbal & Non-Verbal
  • Only take 1 touch before shooting
  • Keep head down. Follow through. Make sure to hit the target! Go across the GK
  • Off sides count - so coach must watch player does not go past cone before shot taken

    Possession - 5 v 2 (10 mins)

    Method:

    • 5 v 2 Possession
    • Area should be large to begin with, 20 x 20. If players find it too easy, shorten the area
    • 5 x Green players must keep possession. If they get 5 x passes = 1 goal. If Red players wins ball back and dribble outside area = 1 goal
    • Play for 2 or 3 mins (or longer if required), keep score
    • Change Red players in the middle
    • Green players can move up and down the line
    • Players on the outside can not be tackled

    Coaching Points:

    • Good communication: verbal (e.g. calling names) & nonverbal (e.g. hand signals for where they want the ball or where they want a player to move to)
    • Accurate and good weighted passes
    • Players on the outside should control the ball, take a touch, before passing again. Try control on the back foot and pass with the opposite foot, changing direction of play
    • Green players should create passing lanes, i.e. can they see the player they want to pass to
    • Can Red players work as a team when closing down, staying connected
