Juggling (10 mins)

Work on juggling with the feet. Start with various simple patters (foot/catch, bounce/foot/catch, etc.). Then work your way into juggling with both feet and thigh

Coaching Points:

•Strike with instep/laces (point toe down)

•Watch your foot strike the center of the ball (head steady)

Technical Activity (25 mins)

In a 30x25 grid split the players into two groups. One group is inside the grid and the other group is spread around the outside of the grid. The players around the outside have a ball in their hands, and the inside players do not have a ball. For 60 seconds, the inside group checks to a player on the outside, receives a tossed ball, controls it, and passes it back along the ground. Then they’ll find a new person on the outside to repeat the sequence. This continues for one minute. Switch the groups.

For the final round have the players throw the ball in like they are taking a throw in (ball comes from behind head and both feet stay on the ground), the player receiving the ball controls it with whichever surface is applicable and plays it back along the ground.

Techniques to work on:

•Inside of foot (right and left)

•Laces (right and left)

•Thigh (right and left)

oHow can you get the ball to the ground quicker?

oWhat surfaces cushion the ball the best?

oShould you get the ball out of the air or let it bounce?

Coaching Points:

•Cushion the ball with a large surface

•Get the ball to the ground under control quickly

•Take the ball out of the air (no bounce)

3v3 or 2v2 (throw-ins) (20 mins)

Set up two fields so no kids are sitting out. The field should be approximately 30 yards long x 25 yards wide with a small goal or gate on each end line. Players compete in a 2v2 or 3v3 setting and score a point by passing or dribbling the ball through the goals/gates. Rotate the teams. Any out of bounds starts with a Throw-In to promote a lot of receiving out of the air opportunities.

•How can you get that ball under control quicker?

•What might be a better surface to use?

•Should you get the ball out of the air or let it bounce?

Coaching Points

•Cushion the ball with a large surface

•Get the ball to the ground under control quickly

•Take the ball out of the air (no bounce)

Scrimmage 6v6 (20 mins)

Before this scrimmage give the players a brief introduction to the offside rule then call offsides during the scrimmage so the players start getting introduced to it.

We also need to make sure that they are taking throw ins now instead of passing or dribbling the ball in on a throw in situation.

Facilitate the game and help with positions, positioning, and game format. Facilitate a basic scrimmage with a goalkeeper and six field players. Allow the kids to “PLAY” but give guidance when necessary. Use a “coaching in the game” approach to emphasize the topics from this week’s training. Be sure to use the labeled names for the positions!

Coaching Points:

•Cushion the ball with a large surface

•Get the ball to the ground under control quickly

•Take the ball out of the air (no bounce)
