Description

Even Number game like exercises to create a high intensity atmosphere and work rate for players.

Coaching Points to look for:

- Players creating, finding and utilising 2v1s

- Limit amount of time dribbling (this will slow the game down)

- Discipline in attack and defence, making sure players are in the right places and don't stand still holding space. Everyone should be moving throughout the drills continuously

Feel free to mix up the numbers to create an attacking or defending over/underload if one team begins to dominate too much - or add a joker player who will always be on the attacking team in possession.

Defend Closest 2/3

This conditioned game works well for either full field or half pitch.

Rules:

Team in possession of the ball can play across all 3 channels, without restrictions.

Defending team has to be in the nearest 2 channels - i.e ball in the left channel, every defending team player has to be in the left and middle channel. If the ball transitions to the middle channel, every defensive player has to be within the central channel.

Key Points:

Discipline in defence to become narrow and protect hotline/central channel.

Attacking team utilise the space out wide in help side channels.

Variation:

- Once a turn over has occurred, the team now in possession has to change the channel before they can score

5v5 game smaller area

Game Rules:

5v5 game in a decent sized playing area (width of second PC mark is good size to the 25m line). Normal hockey rules, score within a smaller D.

No hitting.

Variations:

- Man Marking - if your opposite player scores, you run to side fence and back - leaving your team a man down, so reinforces tight marking.

- Once you make a pass, you have to get ahead of the ball (towards attacking goal)

- Can't pass back to the player you received from

- 3 touch only

- Forehand only (a great condition to restrict players that go to reverse too often or get lazy with left-right drags)

Multidirectional 5v5

Game Rules:

- 5v5 game in a rectangular shaped pitch (length/width of 25m zone is a great size)

- Blue Team when they gain possession attack end lines left to right as we look at the pitch.

- Orange Team when they gain possession attack top and bottom as we look at the pitch.

Make sure the playing area has a short and wide area, and also a long and narrow aspect so teams adapt to play narrow and wide depending on which they attack.

This should challenge the players reactions and transition phases as suddenly changing their focus on where to defend once losing possession.

Can add in extra points for a straight pass from one end to the other as this highlight poor defending of the hotline and great use of space/distribution from team in possession.

4 Goals

Even number game with 4 goals. If you have GK's available then feel free to put them in these goals. Keep tally of scores and add a forfeit for losing team at the end to increase intensity.

Variation 1:

- 'Turn and Burn' as I like to say. Once a team scores in a set of goals (A+B, or C+D) they change direction and attack the others, keeping possession until a turnover occurs from a tackle, intercept or the ball goes out of play.

- High intensity as will play for up to 5 min periods before giving a drinks break.

Variation 2:

- Orange Team attacks Goals A+D, Blue Team attacks Goal C+D - similar idea of turn and burn.

- If team splay direct it will be harder, so teams must utilise the width to overcome opponents

Variation 3:

- Orange Team attacks Goals A and C, Blue Team attacks foals B and D.

- Focuses on defending narrow and then playing in to space with speed such as a counter attack.
