UEFA B licence- in possession- switching play-specific session

welsh way principles:

In possession:

  • Making the pitch as big as possible
  • who can switch play effective?
  • Create and exploit the space
  • Ball speed
  • Playing through, around and over

Out of possession:

  • Force direction of play
  • Defend narrow
  • Leave the furthest player
  • Stop the switch

Organization

  • Full-width pitch by 65 yards long.
  • Pitch is split into channels of 20 yards in width and is tapered in half by flat discs.
  • Three mini goals, one positioned in the middle and two out wide.
  • Footballs are placed in the goal where the keeper is playing in.
  • The numbers of players are 15(9v8)
Reds coached:9 players 1-4-3-3( minus RB and LB)=1-2-3-3Blues managed:8 players 1-4-2-3-1( minus GK, RM, and LM)= 4-2-1-1The red team RW and LW are locked in the wide zone.

Instructions

  • The reds are in possession of the ball and are coached.
  • The red's objective is to try to switch the ball before scoring into any of the three goals.
  • If the ball goes out of play we restart with the GK
  • If the blues win the ball they will have to counter-attack to score as quickly as possible(10-15 seconds)

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
  • The two wingers need to maintain the width and the depth of the pitch by playing high and wide giving them time and space to receive the ball and creating chances.
  • Players must show good body position when receiving the balls in the wide channels so that they can see more of the pitch.
  • One of the two advanced central midfielders must find space high up the central channel so that it creates space for the other two midfielders to switch the play.
  • Players must not try and force the switch if it isn't on, they should try and keep possession of the ball so it can create space for them to switch the ball.
  • Wide players must come short to give an option if one of the CB has the ball in their channel so it gives the blue fullback something to think about. Once the ball is in the central zone the wide player must make a movement out to the touchline making the pitch big again.
  • When switching the play the ball needs to travel at speed so it is harder for the opponent to travel across to intercept the ball
Blue team
  • They must leave the furthest zone from the ball empty.
  • The blues must protect the central area by being compact
  • Blues should press the ball in the wide areas with numbers so it makes it hard for the playout.
  • When you win possession try and get a shot/score as quickly as possible (10-15).

Scoring system

  • If the reds switch the play from one bottom wide zone to the other bottom wide zone they will be given 1 point.
  • If the reds switch the play from one bottom wide zone to one top wide zone they will be given 3 points.
  • If the reds score after making a successful switch they will be given an extra 1 point.
  • Blues will be given 2 points if they get a shot on target.
  • If the blues score before the countdown they will be given 5 points.

  • If the reds are having too much success, players in the middle will be limited to 2-3 touches.
  • Wide players are limited to 3 touches
  • To make it harder for the reds only two players are allowed in the wide channels.
  •  Add an extra player for the blues to make it a 9v9.

Switch of play SSG

Organization

  • Three mini-goals and wide channels are removed. A big goal is placed on the 65-yard line, tapered lines going diagonally from the post on each side of the post.
  • Full-width pitch by 65 yards long.
  • Footballs are placed in the goal where the keeper is playing in.
  • The numbers of players are 16(9v9)
  •  A goalkeeper is added in for the blues.

Instructions

  • We have a 9v9 game with no corners or throw-ins.
  • The reds are coached to try and switch the play and still work on the same principles as applied in the SPECIFIC practice. The blues will be managed and they are also working on the same principles of defending the switch that they were managed in the SPECIFIC practice.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

  • The two wingers need to maintain the width and the depth of the pitch by playing high and wide giving them time and space to receive the ball and creating chances.
  • Players must show good body position when receiving the balls in the wide channels so that they can see more of the pitch.
  • The advanced midfielders must give support to the wingers in the wide area so that they can create a 2v1 situation.
  • One of the two advanced central midfielders must find space high up behind the two defensive midfielders,  this will create space for the other two midfielders to switch the play.
  • Players must not try and force the switch if it isn't on, they should try and keep possession of the ball so it can create space for them to switch the ball.
  • Wide players must come short to give an option if one of the CB has the ball on their side of the field, this will give the blue fullback something to think about. Once the ball is in the with one of the three midfielders the wide player must make a movement out to the touchline making the pitch big again.
  • When switching the play the ball needs to travel at speed so it is harder for the opponent to travel across to intercept the ball.
  • Scoring system

    • If the reds score the goal they will be given 1 point.
    • If the reds make a successful switch of play they will be given 2 points.
    • If they make 2 successful switches they will be given 4 points.
    • If the blues win the ball high up the field they will be given 1 point.
    • If the blues win the ball and shot on target before the countdown they will be given 2 points.
    • If the blues score after winning the ball before the countdown they will be given 5 points.

    Progression/regression

    • Players must make a switch before going for the goal.
    • Midfielders are restricted to 2-3 touches
    • The blues are limited to 2-3 touches when they win the ball.
