Passing tech- first 5

Timings- 10 mins

-Flat cones, 2x set up for passing drill as higher numbers. Set up within attack v defence set up

How it works:

-Player with ball begins the technical

-Pass into player in the middle who will start on the middle cone, backpedal from the cone as the ball is coming in, receive on half turn and play out to the other side

-Players then follow their pass, so the player who played it into the middle then becomes the middle player, next to receive on the half turn

-Ball gets played across the line to next player and back through the middle to next player in the middle, receving on half turn and playing out the other side

-Ball is played across back to the start

Technical/coaching points:

Player receving ball on half turn- start on middle cone, peel away from cone in a quick movement, call for ball and tell them where you want it to be played, open hips, receive ball on back foot and play out to other side.

-Checking shoulder as they make the movement, as the ball is being played and just before receiving the ball

Player passing in- wait for queue to play the ball, listen to where they want it and ensure good pass detail and ball speed. Read their movements, and play to their back foot.

Players receiving ball on the outside cones- be ready on toes, make slight movement away from cone as the ball is coming in to create space away from the cone. Receive on back foot, get head up for next pass and pass with good detail and correct ball speed into next player.

Attack V defence

Attack V defence with focus on set pieces

-Touch line with cones 10 yds in from actual touch line each side. Byline with goal 15yds from half way line.

-Teams split evenly in half

-Players will play an attack v defence game

-This will have focus on their play to see; what they have taken from training so far both defensively and attacking minded. To test their knowledge on set pieces we have practiced to see if they are setting up correctly. Coaches can let them take the set piece and if it is correct they can play on, if incorrect have them do it again ensuring they set up properly.

-For the final 5 minutes, players will all come together as a starting 11 with positions given. Coach will shout out different set piece plays and they should move as a team to where they think they should be.

Passing tech- 2nd 5

Timings- 5 minutes

How it works:

-Ball played into front foot of attacker, while defender is being physical and putting pressure from behind them

-Attacker turns out away from pressure to play across to next player

-Attacker follows their pass to join queue on other side.

-Defender them becomes attacker

-Player who played ball in now becomes the defender in the middle.

-Ball comes back through to next attacker and defender.

Coaching points/Technical detail and mechanics

-For attacker: read which side there is pressure on, and have a firm base with the back foot, using arms to keep them away

-Communicate with ball player, telling them when and where you want it

-Receive ball on outside of front foot ideally to turn away from pressure and play through

-For defender: use whole body and be physical putting pressure on them to prevent them turning and playing the ball. As ball comes in, try to reach foot out in front to get a touch and intercept the ball.

-For player passing in: wait for the right queue to play the ball, listen to where the attacker wants it and ensure good pass detail and correct weight of pass for the distance the ball is being played.
