Warm Up (5 mins)

Begin with some stretches for the arms, legs and back using the ball where possible
Work with the hands for reactions and hand eye coordination

  • 2 touch no bounce (with hands only then progress to no hands) looking to use the mannequin for more of challenge 
  • 4 high catches (2 on each side back to back) done quickly to get moving and blood pumping (2 or 3 sets of this)
  • Volley to keeper to a make W save (Progress to face the other way then turn round and make the save)

Around the Mannequin & save (15 mins)

Keeper starts behind the the mannequin & then comes round it and make a diving save (4 sets and swap sides)


Coaching Points

  • Chest facing towards the ball at all times to help
  • Light on feet to get around 
  • Step towards the line of the ball with nearest foot. 
  • Securing the ball on impact as the body hits the floor
  • If ball can't be held deflect the ball into safe area (out of play or to sides of the goal NOT in back forward)
  • Recovery saves to gather the ball 
  • Recovery Lines to defend the goal.
Progression
  • Roll the ball out to server and get round the mannequin and then make the save.
  • The mannequin will be placed in forward to serves to recreate keeper 'seeing it late' or a deflection off a player so keeper needs react to the flight of the ball.

Saving with The Feet (10 mins)

The exercise is aimed for the keeper practice saving with their feet for a low angled shots at are close the body.

Keeper should be looking to have at least 1 hand to try and stop the shot if it goes above the leg.

Progression:

  • Look into how the K-save can be used to prevent from being scored across goal.
  • A shot from the centre and quick recovery to the side for a low angled shot to save with the feet.

Coaching Points:

  • Become as big as possible.
  • Drop the knee into a K shape but not to the floor.

Dealing with crosses (10 mins)

Keeper start position to deal with cross from various different angle and to come & claim the ball. 


Progressions:

  • Serve the closer out of hands but high into the air
  • Swap sides

Key Points:

  • Starting position in relation to the ball (can you start off the line a bit more when the ball is close to the byeline, in-swing and out-swing crosses will be a factor as well) 
  • Catch at the highest and safest point (elbows slightly flexed & see the ball into hands)
  • The 'W' Technique (Soft hands, Strong wrists)
  • Take off on 1 leg
  • Bring a knee up for protection
  • Land on 2 feet where possible
