Transition Practice 4v2

Session Organisation:

8 players in the group

Play 4v2 in each end area (see progressions).

2 players quickly press to win ball back.

Not allowed in red zone before ball is played through.

If successful in regaining possession, recycle to other end and 2 opponents now press.

Unlimited touches.

Team in possession 5 passes = 1pt, Team out of possession ball back to your own side = 1pt

Coaching Points:

Out of Possession -
  • Reactions to losing the ball.
  • Close the ball quickly.
  • Cut off passing options.
  • Don't over commit.
  • Be honest and determined. 

In possession -

  • Make space as big as possible.
  • Select when to stay on the ball, when to pass the ball.
  • Draw in defenders to play through them when possible.
  • Quick movements to support the player on the ball.

Progression:

Make space larger (team out of possession).

Make space smaller (team in possession).

Allow a 3rd defender into opposition half to gain some success.

Reduce amount of touches for team in possession.
