Station 2: Ball Mastery/Semi Opposed (20 mins)

Organization

  • Set up the practice as seen in the image above. Area 10x10yds, with two 1 yard square boxes to either side of players.

Instructions

  • Players face one another and are separated by a line that the player without a ball cannot cross. The player with the ball attempts to dribble the ball to marked zones A or B.

Coaching Points

  • Players need to shift the ball quickly from one foot to another to enable them to disguise where and when they will change direction. Players should be using different surfaces of their feet to enable them to manipulate the ball quickly (Inside, outside, sole, and laces).
  • Players should keep the ball close to their feet to allow the defender to not recognise which direction they intend to go. In progression encourage players to sift the ball from left to right to make them unpredictable.

Progressions

Make It Easier

  • The defender has the ball as well to give the attacker more time.

Make It More Challenging

  • When the attacker enters the box it becomes a 1v1 skill practice to the mini goal.

Station 6: Dead - Next - Go (DNG) (20 mins)

Dead - Next - Go (DNG)

Game is designed (and begins) as a 3v3.

Team 1 (BLUE) begins attacking 3v3 in attempt to score. If the ball remains in play (including goalkeeper save) play continues until a goal is scored or ball goes out of play.

If/when the ball goes out of play and/or a goal is scored, the defensive team "GREEN" (in the half the ball went out) goes off the field. They are replaced by a new 3 attackers that enter from the endline who attempt to GO and score quickly.

While this transition occurs, the last player to touch the ball on the attacking team (BLUE in this scenario) before it went out must touch the attacking post (even if it was not a shot or goal - could be just a simple ball out of play and/or giveaway out of bounds). This will leave us down to 2 defenders against the 3 new attackers.

Simply put, when the ball goes "DEAD" in your own half, the "NEXT" team of 3 is up to "GO!"

This is a constant 3v2 transition game which pushes the tempo. Set realistic expectations of timing (start with 4 minutes, work to 6 minutes, etc). Provide adequate rest.

Coaching Points (both teams)

reinforce cues of when to press, when to be patient and drop off

- positioning and communication to close field space and make the field smaller

- reinforce body positioning, field positioning and communication, when to press and win the ball

• “Attack”
• “Escape”
• “Be creative”
• “What skills can you use to be effective in 1v1’s ?”

Progressions:
• Add a half-way line and the condition is you cannot pass backwards in the opposition half (Implicitly, players will be forward thinking)
• Marking is assigned so that players escape a direct opponent
• Reduce the player area space
