Welsh way principles - Breaking lines (Can we play through, around and over)

Understand when and how to play through, around or over the opposition based on the type of pressure applied.

Organization/Area size

Area Size 24m x 16m with a half way line

Play 4 x 3 min with time set aside for terminal feedback in the breaks. ongoing Concurrent feedback will be given during the session. Use of tactics board to demo the session or even possible walk through at the start.

Play 4 blocks of 3 minutes with a 2 minute break. = 14m

Equipment:

3 sets colored bibs, good number of balls 10 if possible to maintain good ball rolling time, Markers / Cones or Poles,

Explanation

The objective of the blue team in possession is to try and play through the opposition players and score by transferring the ball into the end yellow player. If they do they keep possession. The team in possession can use the 3 CP to create a 7 v 4 situation.

Key points

Blue

  • Work with blue team only in possession.
  • Sub topic of out of possession principles when needed.

Reds

  • Reds are managed in a realistic way to press the ball and defend.
  • When is possession they still adhere to the in possession principles which is breaking lines.

Conditions, challenges and targets

  • Players must try to break lines of the opposition team by threading a split pass through opposing players. Each team will score 3 goals for splitting the opposition players and 1 goal for playing around.
  • Limit touches on the outside, 2 or 3 touch.
  • Cant play long ball from CP to CP.
  • Limit the touches of the opposition.

Key Points

In possession:

Show your feet.

Try to play through, around or over the opposition. 

Make the pitch big (width/depth)

Limit touches to move the ball quickly.

Look forward to play.

Try to play in area's that allow you to see 3 corners.

Out of possession:

Defend narrow.

Prevent split passes

Protect the central area

Force the ball wide

Protect the space behind.

In possession:

The team in possession can use the 3 CP to create a 7 v 4 situation. Can the blue team now also play over. This is why the pitch is bigger.
