Warm-Up (10 mins)

Key Factors

  • Keep your eyes firmly fixed on the target.
  • Step forward into the roll and stay close to the ground.
  • Make sure the arm and hand follow through in a straight line.
  • Release the ball just before your arm moves past your front foot.

Organisation

  • This is a 10 minute warm-up practice that can be completed with either 2 of 4 goalkeepers. You could possibly also use 3. All of the goalkeepers start on a cone, about 15-20 yards away from the opposite goalkeeper. Inside the area is a smaller area (size dependent on age and ability of goalkeepers). Two goalkeepers start with the ball and they should attempt to roll the ball through the smaller square inside the area. The opposite goalkeeper will collect the ball using a ground scoop or a short-barrier technique, and will then roll the ball back. The progressions for this practice include:
  • Have a competition and see which pair can complete the most rolls to each other in 30 seconds (or more).
  • Distribute the ball around the outside of the area, and you could use 2 balls dependent on your goalkeepers ability.
  • Progress to an overarm throw. You may need to make the distances bigger for this.

Technical Practice (20 mins)

Key Factors

  • Keep your eyes firmly fixed on the target.
  • Step forward into the roll and stay close to the ground.
  • Make sure the arm and hand follow through in a straight line.
  • Release the ball just before your arm moves past your front foot.
  • Make an early decision on what type of distribution to use. E.g. a roll, throw or a set.

Organisation

  • This practice involves 3 or 4 goalkeepers who will rotate in sets of 5. One goalkeeper starts as the active player, and they will save a low shot from another goalkeeper who will be a server. Once they have saved the shot, they must bounce back up and look to distribute quickly using 3 different methods. They can either roll the ball out through a small gate or mini-goal, attempt a longer overarm throw in to a bigger small sided goal, or roll out to the coach (who acts as a midfielder who drops deep) and receive the ball back for a long range pass out wide. Ensure that your goalkeeper receives the ball from both sides of the area to get them used to turning out and distributing the ball at different angles. Progressions for this practice include:
  • Making the practice a competition between the goalkeepers, and having each target worth a different amount of points, such as the closest gates being 1 point and the goals being worth 3 points. This replicates the risk v reward factor of a game.
  • Have the goalkeepers take part in a SSG where they have the same decision to make, but now with live players. In the SSG game, every time the ball goes out of play, it should restart from the teams goalkeeper to increase the amount of chances the goalkeeper gets to practice their distribution.
