Organization:2 defenders (1) and (2) start at the cone 5 yards behind the two mannequins. The two passers (3) and (4) are positioned ten yards ahead of the mannequins and a server starts with the balls right behind the pug goal in the middle.
Activity: Server plays a short pass to player (3) or (4). One defender (player 1) goes at a time and must sprint towards the mannequin directly ahead of the whichever player (3) or (4) recieves it. Player (3) or (4) then opens up in possession and passes straight ahead to try to hit the mannequin. The defender must step in front of the mannequin and intercept the ball with one touch, then pass it through the pug goal on the second-touch. As defender (1) recovers, server immediately restarts for player (2).
Variations:Progressions: 1. Passers versus defenders. Passers have eight balls and get a point for each time they hit the mannequin. Defenders get one point for each time they intercept the ball and pass it into the pug goal. 2. Service in the air so that defenders have to head the ball or control it with their chests and play it into the mini-goal. 3. Servers can now pass diagonally and hit either cone. Now it becomes more difficult as defenders have to read the type of pass being played.
Coaching Points: Identify shere the ball will be played. Step in front of the ball. Win the ball but keep it under control. Find a pass into feet of a central midfielder (pug goal).

Organization:Play takes place in the middle of the field, with two pug goals located ten yards inside the other half. the two interceptors have to start on their respective cones and cannot enter the half that the central defenders occupy.
Activity:Play starts with two central defenders (A and B) passing the ball back and forth (1) and (2). Both defenders should alwasy take one touch forward, then pass the ball diagonally back-wards to the parner then after passing the ball the defender should drop off to create a new angle. This passing pattern is critical for any central defensive pairing and means that there are no square passes or forward passes, both of which are a disaster for any team in possession. During this time, the interceptors (C and D) simply wait by their cones. After 30 to 45 seconds, on the coaches signal, the central defender who receives the next pass must then drive forward (3) towards the halfway line at full speed. Then after two or three touches, the defender must try and pass it into the pug goal ahead. On the same signal, the interceptor opposite the central defender who is in possession (4), must sprint across and try to block the pass in front of the pug goal. The central defenders get one point for a goal, while the interceptors get one point for a save.
Variations:
Coaching Points: The role of the interceptor sprinting across challenges the central defender who is in possessino in two ways: 1.) How quickly he/she can drive up the field and exploit the space ahead. 2). The weight and accuracy of the pass under pressure. If the central defender misses the target, you most likely have run into a technical problem. The solution may be in how the central defender sets their feet before making the pass. If the interceptor continually saves the pass in front of the pug goal, the weight of teh pass needs to be stronger. Encourage the passing between central defenders at the start of the exercise to be crisp and sharp.

Organization:The central defensive pairing is now joined by a holding midfielder.
Activity:Begin passing in a triangle (players A, B and E) in any order. Make sure play does not become predictable between the three players as this will lead to complacency. On coaches signal, the player in possession must play into the holding midfielder, who then must transfer the ball quickly to the oncoming central defender on the other side. The central defender who receives the ball (A) must drive forward with one or tow touches and must then pass into the pug goal straight ahead. The interceptor comes from the same line as the first passer and performs the same role as from the first phase-stopping the ball from going into the pug goal.
Variations: Progression: The central defender (player A or B) can now pass into either pug goal. This gives them the option of a diagonal pass. Their decision should be dictated by what side has the most space.

Clearing Challenge.
Organization: 8 balls (4 from each side) -
Activity: Defending partners must clear the ball in the air past the clearance zone to get a point.
Variations:Progression 1: (A) makes a run around defender/Flag in 6 yard box, then recieves a pass from (D), then (A) immediately clears the ball IN THE AIR into the clearance zone. (B) and (C) move at the same time. Count how many succesfull clears in the air. Then switch to see if pairs (D) and (C) can clear more than (A) and (B). The pairing with the most points wins.
