Skill practice

Description:

Players in the middle make at least 3 passes and then look to play in the wide midfielder. Once the ball has been played, the attacking team play with the wingers to try and score, the out of possession team recover the ball and can counter attack, having the wide midfielders join their team. Oop team can tackle the wide players. Once the ball goes out of play, start again with the rondo in the middle. No offsides to begin with.

2 or 3 teams depending on numbers, winner stays on.

Objective:

To get the wide midfielders to anticipate the attacking transition and responding in a positive manner.

Coaching Points:

Wide midfielders to watch the play and get ready to be the outlet, with straight, direct runs. Anticipate the flow of the game and react accordingly. Once the change of possession has happened, it's too late.

Join in and support at the back post. (Final third no restrictions)

Play the ball from the rondo in front of the supporting wide player so they can move onto it (attacking work rate is always higher than defensive work rate) and then support the attack themselves.

Progression:

More passes before releasing wide player.

Must observe the offside rule going into final third.
