Description

Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition)

8vs8 in half of the pitch with a diagonal line cutting some wide channel area not needed for the main topic (not using full backs); each team is scoring goals in a big goal.

Initially, Blue team begins as the team in possession with the GK playing the ball to the center back close to him and then game is on. Objective for the Blue team is attacking the big goal in the attacking third of the pitch by switching side of play and attack free spaces in the other side of the pitch. Blue team players start defending and have the objective of trying to prevent the switch of the play and regain ball possession by pressing ball and covering the spaces. Blue team scores on the big goal in the midfield line.

Coach is going to address technical aspects of controlling (i.e., 1.On toes; 2.Eye on the ball; 3.Get in line with the ball; 4.Decide and present surface towards the ball; 5.Relax on the impact) and passing the ball (i.e., 1.Look at the target; 2.Eye on the ball; 3.Angle of approach; 4.non-kicking foot alonside of the ball in a comfortable position; 5.Strike centre of the ball with inside/outside of the foot with identified area of the ball; 6.Firm ankle; 7. Follow through towards target) in order to switch the play fast and sharpe.

Coach is using a walkthrough demonstration at the beginning of the session and then coaching on the flow (i.e., concurrent) of the session. Aditionally, coach will stop the session (i.e., coaching process) and demonstrate adequate behaviors from either in and out of possession in order to facilitate the process of switching the play more efficiently by presenting solutions for the problems defensive team demonstrates.

What is coach looking for?

  • Make the pitch big
  • Maintain the width
  • Decision making when to switch
  • Who can switch?

SSG: Problem #1 (10 mins)

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

Progression: Switching side of play twice before scoring gives attacking team 3 points

Regression: Having red center midfielders switch positions and play with #6 in the back and #8 and #10 playing in front; tell blue center back to create a better support

Challenges

Rui's Problem #1: Defensive line is placed in a high block in a very compacted way among all players sharing no more than 3 channels of space; defensive fullbacks get a tight mark on their winger (#7 or #11) when ball is in their side; the closest center back to the ball is covering the space in a closer channel; the other center back is shifting and balance space in and the fullback from other side is shift and balance space inside by being aligned with the back post.

Solution #1: Wingers (#7 or #11) need to be fully opened next to the side line and keep the width of the field; winger receiving the ball checks in to receive the ball from center back (#4) or center midfielder (#6, #8, or #10), and holds ball for a couple of seconds waiting on his mark to to get closer and then plays the ball short to anyone of his closest teammates; one of the center midfielders (#6, #8, #10) or center back (#4) should switch the side of play to the other opened winger as soon as he identifies the cue that all reds are condensed in only 3 channels and place a long ball on the back of the defensive line in the space.

Conditions
No corner or free kicks; no playing on wide areas in the middle half; ball is resetting from respective goals when gets off bounce

Targets/Scoring
1pt - Offensive team scores on big goal
2pts - Offensive team scores on big goal from a switch play
1pts - Defensive team scores in the midfield big goal

2pts - Defensive team scores in the midfield big goal after stopping the switch

What is coach looking for?

  • Make the pitch big
  • Maintain the width
  • Control the ball with back foot
  • Long pass on the space
  • Sharpe pace on the passes

SSG: Problem #2 (10 mins)

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):

Progression: Switching side of play twice before scoring gives attacking team 3 points; tell defensive #10 to not press offensive center back; step defensive line up 5yd

Regression: Having red center midfielders switch positions and play with #6 in the back and #8 and #10 playing in front; tell blue center back to create a better support

Challenges

Rui's Problem #2: Defensive line is placed in a low block in a very compacted way among all players sharing no more than 3 channels of space; defensive fullbacks get a tight mark on their winger (#7 or #11) when ball is in their side; the closest center back to the ball is shifted to the closest channel related to the ball; the other center back is covering and balancing space in the middle and the fullback from other side is shifting inside and be aligned with the back post; defensive midfielders (#6, #6, and #10) have a tight mark on offensive center midfielders and do not allowed the switch of play through the middle.

Solution #2: Wingers (#7 or #11) need to be fully opened next to the side line and keep the width of the field; winger receiving the ball checks in to receive the ball from offensive center back (#4) or center midfielder (#6, #8, or #10), and plays the ball back to offensive center back; the objective is playing short combination of passes so defensive #10 leaves a gap space in the middle and offensive center midfielder (#6) is able to switch the side of play to the other opened winger as soon as he controls the ball with his back foot.

Conditions
No corner or free kicks; no playing on wide areas in the middle half; ball is resetting from respective goals when gets off bounce

Targets/Scoring
1pt - Offensive team scores on big goal
2pts - Offensive team scores on big goal from a switch play through the center midfielders
1pts - Defensive team scores in the midfield big goal

2pts - Defensive team scores in the midfield big goal before 5sec

What is coach looking for?

  • Make the pitch big
  • Maintain the width
  • Control the ball with back foot
  • Short passes on the foot
  • Sharpe pace on the passes
  • The cue to move into mid space
