Objective - Understand basic actions and decisions around defending the area 

Intentions

  • Solid fundamental technique when smothering ball
  • Basic idea of Defend the Area: Can we stop chances before they happen? 
  • Be brave, it's your space, own it 
  • Communication is ESSENTIAL. Call every ball loud and clear. It makes you the boss of your box.
    • They must repeat the action if they do not verbally call a loose ball. No exceptions.

Objective - build ball familiarity and prepare actions relevant to session

  • Ball familiarity (under leg, behind back, etc)
  • Swap balls on coaches command
  • Carioca (karaoke)
  • Carioca w/ball swap
  • Smother swap
Focus
  • Quick and light on feet
  • Always square to the centre of the grid
  • Smother - get low, step to ball, lead with hands to the ball, keep head low

Activity - Handling/Low Ext. Gauntlet (15 mins)

Objective - Work handling & low extension while introducing pivot footwork

  • 1) GK starts set square to S1 (Coach)
  • 2) GK steps into set and takes catch from S2
  • 3) GK pivots and takes low ext save to right
  • 4) Repeat for each server
  • 5) Work other side
Coaching Points

  • Pivot step - open front leg, get SQUARE to shooter/server
  • Pivot first, then next movement. Don't try to do both at once
  • Reinforce good handling technique - choice of technique, good set, catch ball in front of body, secure ball
  • Reinforce good low ext. technique - low set, head and hands to ball, slide and extend bottom hand

Activity - Intro to Smother Technique (20 mins)

Objective - Introduce the smother technique and concept of Defend the Area 

  • 1) GK sets and takes catch from next GK in line
  • 2) Pivot step to be square with coach (S1)
  • 3) Short shuffle footwork through cones (emphasize fast feet!)
  • 4) Catch from coach
  • 5) Over hurdle before coach rolls/drops ball for smother (the MUST loudly call for it)
Coaching Points

  • Smother - body low, step towards ball, shoot hands to ball, keep head low
  • Communicate - call loud and clear before attacking loose balls
  • Pivot step - Open front leg to get shoulders/hips square to shooter
  • Footwork - Quick and light on our feet, small steps, upper body still (make them hold ball if this is an issue)
  • Reinforce good handling habits

Game - Keepers vs Strikers (15 mins)

Objective - Explore Defend the Area concepts in a fun, competitive environment 

  • Two even teams in a small pitch with 2 goals

  • The team in-possession are "strikers" - they cannot use their hands
  • The team out-of-possession are "keepers" - they can ALL use their hands
  • Make sure players rotate positions/roles
Coaching Points

  • Set position - get low when close to ball
  • Smother technique - low, step to ball, lead with/shoot hands, head low
  • Mentality - Be brave, you must own your area
  • Communicate loudly before attacking loose ball
