FUNctional Activity: Beat My Record (5 mins)

Session Organization: Suggested Equipment: 20 cones, 12 balls, 2 sets of bibs, 2-4 portable goals, 12 portable poles. Grid Size: 25m x 25m with six gates inside.

Explanation: Divide players into two equal teams (i.e. 6 & 6 as pictured). One team (white) has a ball each inside the grid, while the other (yellow) team waits outside the grid without a ball.

On coach's call, the players on white team try to collect as many points points as possible in 30 seconds by running with the ball through any of the 6 gates. Players cannot pass through the same gate twice in a row. Yellow team will then repeat sequence and you may organise for players on each team to have direct opponent (in terms of score). Repeat for several repetitions.

Progression: Add one or two "taggers" from the outside team to apply pressure on players in the grid.

Evaluation:

Encourage players to take heavier touches into open space.

Praise efforts to keep the ball under control.

Encourage players to scan their surroundings.

Recognition Phase: Game (10 mins)

Session Organization: Equipment as listed previously. Grid Size: create a 30m x 40m game (guide).

Explanation: Divide squad into two teams: 4 (white) + GK, 6 (yellow) + GK for a squad of 12. White team GK always starts/restarts play (place balls nearby). All players to start in their own half from restarts.

Scoring System: Regular rules for the first 5 minutes, all goals worth 1 point. After 5 minutes, reward 3 points to yellow team if they score a goal after any player runs with the ball for at least 10m (Incentive). Any other goal scored by yellow team is worth 1 point, while a goal for the white team is worth 2 points.

Progression: Reduce/increase required distance to run with the ball for bonus points. Can also create two games of 1 + GK v 3 + GK.

Evaluation: Key Coaching Points as before:

Encourage players to take heavier touches into open space.

Praise efforts to keep the ball under control.

Encourage players to scan their surroundings.

Intervention: Skill Breakdown (Attacking) (10 mins)

Session Organization: Equipment as listed previously. Grid Size: Create several 15m x 7m grids with side goals as shown (guide).

Explanation: 3 players per grid, 2 attackers (yellow) and 1 defender (white). Game starts when a yellow player runs with the ball into the grid, as this happens the defender enters the grid from the opposite end to form a 2v1 duel.

Scoring System: Attackers get 2 points for running with the ball into any of the two side goals. Defender gets 1 point for winning the ball and running with it to the attackers' start line.

Progression: Swap role of attackers/defenders regularly.

Evaluation:

Pre-Action: Can you keep ball within your control? Can you keep your head up to see the opponent?

Action: Are you able to take heavier touches into open space?

Post-Action: Can you sprint and push the ball in front of you again?

Key Coaching Words: Scan, Big (touch into space), Sprint.

Intervention: Skill Breakdown (Defending) (10 mins)

Session Organization: Exact same setup as previous Skill Intervention (Multiple grids 15m x 7m with side goals). This time with a focus on defending/challenging for the ball.

Explanation: 2 players per grid in a 1v1 duel. Yellow player (attacker) initiates the game with a dribble from their line, white player (defender) enters from opposite end.

Scoring System: Defender gets 2 points for winning the ball and dribbling over the attacker's starting line. Attacker gets 1 point for running with the ball through either side gate/goals.

Progression: Swap roles of attacker/defender regularly. Defender to start from different angles/distances (side-on or behind attackers).

Evaluation:

Key Coaching Questions:

Pre-Action: Can you apply immediate pressure on the ball carrier?

Action: Can you win the ball when a heavy touch is taken?

Post-Action: Are you able to counter-attack with speed?

Key Coaching Words: Press, Challenge, Fast-break.

Application: Mini Games (20 mins)

Session Organization: Grid Size - Create a 15m x 20m grid (guide) with goals at either end.

Explanation: Split participants into two equal teams and 2 GKs. Evenly distribute these teams into the corners diagonally facing each other. GK starts by playing the ball to their teammate (white team GK to white team player shown). Yellow defender chases white team attacker from the same end in an attempt to try and stop them from scoring at the opposite end. Once action is complete, the next ball will be played by the opposite GK and the sequence will be mirrored from the far end. If the defender wins the ball, they can attack the opposite goal to score.

Scoring System: 1 point for a goal, 1 point to the GK for a save. 2 points for a goal scored when the chaser hasn't reached halfway. 3 points for a defender who wins the ball and score in the opposite goal.

Progression: 2v1 Duels or 2v2 Duels.

Evaluation: See Key Coaching Questions & Words from the previous Skill Interventions (Attacking & Defending).

Evaluation: Free Game (20 mins)

Session Organization: Equipment as listed previously. Grid Size - 30m x 40m (as a guide).

Explanation: Option to return to original Recognition Game (7 v 5 game).

OR

Create 2 games of 4 v 2 (including GKs) for a squad of 12.

All players to start in their own half from re-starts. Footballs with GK on the Overload team to make for faster re-starts. No incentives, all goals worth 1 point.

OR

Progression: Rotate players into different positions to test versatility.

Evaluation: Key Coaching Words:

Attackers: Scan, Big (touch into space), Sprint.

Defenders: Press, Challenge, Fast-break.
