Description

The body is an instrument/tool that can be used to assist to defending and attacking.

1. Introduce players to proper defensive stance.

2. Introduce defending with physicality.

3. Develop players' ability to close down with speed.

4. Develop players' ability to close down at an angle.

5. Develop players' ability to identify when to tackle.

What?: Closing down space in control and using the body to successfully defend in 1v1 situations

When?: 1v1 defensive situations,

Where?: Anywhere on the field where you are the 1st defender

Why?: In order to successfully delay the attack, and to recovery the ball to score.

Who?: 2-11 positions, the player closest to the ball when out of possession, (1st defender)

Warm up

Organization:

  • 2 teams of four
  • 2 sets of goals on each side

Instructions:

  • Each team will have 1 5 minute rep as the attacking team
  • The goal is to dribble the ball through either gate to receive a point

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Close down the space between you and the attacker in control! Fast, slow, low

1v1defensive third

Organization:

  • Set up 2 fields, each with 2 cones on the top outside of the penalty box
  • 1 goalkeeper in goal, and 2 lines on each post

Instructions:

  • Each rep will begin with the goalkeeper kicking a ball out to the top of the penalty box.
  • As soon as the goalkeeper kicks the ball, each player first in each line will run out around the cones and challenge for the ball, going 1v1

3v2

Organization:

Attacking team starts with 3 players, defending team has 4, 2 active & 2 who play as targets. Attacking team must score by dribbling into zone 1 through one of the gates. Defending players can work together to create 2v1 situation with the second defender covering. If the defending team wins the ball they must find a target player.

  • 6v4

Instructions:


Coaching Points/Questions:

  • 1st Defender - Close down quickly, pressure the ball. Slow down/delay the attacker

    2nd Defender - Provide cover to double up for the dribble, positioning to intercept/block a pass/shot

    Communication - Clear, commanding, detailed

    Transition quickly




Regressions/Progressions:

  • Defending team can add another defender to zone 2. Attacking can send two players into zone 1 to make it a 2v2.

1v1 Shark Defence at an Angle (20 mins)

Set Up: 

  • Two teams of 6 players each, 1 GK & 5 x defenders, 6 x attackers.
  • Field sizes 2 x  20 (L) x 15 (W) side by side.
  • 1 x Full size goal & 1 x mini goal.
  • 10 markers.

Action: 

  • The first two players of each red team R2 & R5 start by dribbling the ball away from goal and towards the blue gates. 
  • At the same time Y2 & Y5 cross over behind the goals and defend the opposite area and goal. 
  • R1 & R2 must enter the field by dribbling through the blue gates and start to attack in the goal in which they entered the field. 
  • If the red attacker doesn't score the yellow defender can go and assist his teammate to create a 2v1 defending situation. 
  • Game is then over when goals are scored or ball goals out of play.
Variation/Progressions: 
  • The time of sets or size of the area can be adjusted to suit the needs and abilities of the players.
  • You can adjust numbers by creating a 2v2 etc.

Session Timing:

  • Complete 3 sets of 6 minutes with a 1 minute rest in between sets.
  • Total time of work is 20 minutes.
