Description

This session focuses on the basic technical elements of running with the ball at speed.

Session Aim

  • The aim is for players to develop greater control of the ball when running at speed with both left and right foot.

Coaching Points

  • The best part of the foot to use when running with the ball at speed should always be the laces on the outer side of the foot.
  • Other parts of the foot can be used for greater control but generally cause a slow in speed.

Outcomes
  • When a player becomes equally comfortable running with the ball at speed with both feet, they will develop absolute control of the ball in motion - they will be able to run at full speed, change direction, turn, etc.
Progressions

  • Decision making for running with the ball at speed is to recognise when there is not a good forward passing option but there is space ahead to run without opposition.

Part A Warm Up (10 mins)

Part A (Warm Up) - Follow the leader/lose the marker (10 minutes)

-       Area set up 20m by 20m.

-       Players split into pairs; each with a ball. The ‘Leader’is looking to dribble away and lose the ‘Follower’ as quickly as they can.

-       After 30 seconds; the players stop on coaches call and swap roles and repeat (i.e. leader becomes follower; followerbecomes leader.)

-       After each round players swap partners.

Skill Practice #2 Part A (10 mins)

Part B - RWTB Decision Making (10 minutes)

-     With poles on corners and a marked out central area. Two mannequins set up on opposite sides of the square.

-  Players each have a ball and make equal groups on the poles with one player (or coach) as a bouncer in the middle.

- Players are to Run with the ball at speed between the four corners (one from each side at a time).

- On the sides there is the mannequin; coach to give an instruction of a skill or turn that the player is to do in front of the mannequin as if it is a 1v1.

- If they approach a mannequin and the bouncer is nearby they must have a wall pass with the bouncer around the mannequin.

*Bouncer to not remain on one side but move around.

- If no mannequin is on the side the player is on they must dribble at speed to the next pole.

Skills for 1v1

  • Scissors - Drop the shoulder and step over with one leg to take the ball with the outside of the foot the other way.
  • Chop in front of body - drive at defender before chopping the ball with inside of one foot onto the inside of the other.
  • Chop with back heel - drive at defender before stepping in front of the ball and using the heel of the opposite foot to chop the ball behind the standing leg.

Part B - RWTB Decision Making (15 minutes)

-    With poles on corners and a marked out central area. Two mannequins set up on opposite sides of the square.

-  Players each have a ball and make equal groups on the poles with one player (or coach) as a bouncer in the middle.

- The practice now has two passive defenders in place of the mannequins.

- Players are to Run with the ball at speed between the four corners (one from each side at a time).

- On the sides there is the defender; coach to give an instruction of a skill or turn that the player is to do in front of the defender as if it is a 1v1.

- If they approach a mannequin and the bouncer is nearby they must have a wall pass with the bouncer around the defender.

*Bouncer to move around and not remain on the same side.

- If no mannequin is on the side the player is on they must dribble at speed to the next pole.

Rotate defenders and bouncers every couple of minutes.

Skill Practice #2 (15 mins)

Part C –

-       Area set up with large goals and a GK at one end of the area and mannequins set up at half way.

-  All players with a ball each line up at opposite end to the goal.

-  Player A steps into the area, player B plays the ball into player A who positions themselves to see the whole space (i.e Can you see where the ball is and where you want to go?) and drives forward.

-  The coach is blocking one of the gaps between the mannequins and the player that is dribbling needs to decide which gate he is going through.

-  Once the player is in the attacking half, they can shoot on goal past the GK.

-   As this occurs the player that passes the ball in becomes a defender and chases down the player driving forwards with the ball.

Progression

- Coach can call 'bounce' and the player has to wall pass with the coach around the mannequins.

- Coach can call drive and the player has to drive through a gap where the coach is not standing.

- Replace Coach as defender with a player.
