Explanation
Focus on defending the switch of play and three moments of
Stopping the switch, defending the switch and controlling the
switch
Conditions
Different colour cone for the out-of-focus 6 to start the play from, this will be dictated by the support coach
Interventions
First point - how to deal with stopping the switch? midfielder and fullback - keeping it 2v2 in the wide channel and then if unsuccessful
looking at the "L" shape to stop the switch
Second Point - How to control the switch? Protect the middle; do not be switched through central areas. Keep play in front and force the
possession team to play back through 6 - look at the positioning of the defensive 8's and being on the outside shoulder, ready to press
and draw lines between options.
Third Point - When starting the LSG, look at the involvement of the 9 for the defensive team and their positioning to force the team back
to the goalkeeper while also looking to prevent the ball from being played into the feet of the opposing 6.
what ifs?
what if the wingers decided to cross or beat the full back in a 1v1? can centre backs then drop off? can a centre back slide over? can the pivot take the role of a centre back if the centre back slides? can the 8 take the role of the fullback to cover?
Blocks
4 x 4 minute blocks
Progression
Taking the small-sided goals away from the specific practice in the transition period and introducing an 11-a-side goal with also 2
additional players. 1 Being a 9 for the defensive-focused group and a GK for the attacking-sided group
