Football/Soccer Session (Beginner): U9-U10 Skills Centre - Passing and Receiving (Start Time: 2022-02-11 16:30:00)
Description
Players will work on their passing technique and how to use a pass as another way to get around players. In order to be successful, players will begin with a warm up, followed by a skill focused activity to help improve their passing technique and accuracy. They will then move into 2v1's to try and create and identify moments where a pass may be more helpful than dribbling. Additionally, they will learn the importance of moving into open space when they don't have the ball in order to receive a pass.

Set up: 25x25 grid. Several gates about 2 feet in width. Players partner up with one ball between the two of them.
How to play: Players move around the area trying to connect as many passes through the gates as possible. Players look for a new gate after passing through one; cannot visit the same gate twice in a row. Each successful pass through is a point. Play 60 second rounds.
CP's:
- Have players focus on proper passing a receiving techniques; inside of the foot contact.
- Player with the ball should communicate which gate they want to go to next.
- Receiving player should try to receive with their first touch going in the direction they'd like to
- Players should always be moving; pass and move, pass and move!
Regression: Start stationary; each pair at a gate passing the ball back and forth without movement. Focus on contact with the ball, pass execution, cushion for receiving.
Progressions:
- Have players spread out farther between each other when making their pass
- Have players try passing with their non dominant foot
- Have players try a give-n-go through the gate
- Have a Defending player take up a spot between a gate. Players try to play around or through the gate using passes to draw the defender away.
What this works on:
- Proper passing technique: heel down, toe up, inside contact, foot slightly above the ground
- Paper receiving technique: inside foot, cushion the ball, first touch in the direction they want to go
- Communication; providing each other direction
- Spatial awareness; head ups so they don't run into other players

Set Up: 10x15 grid. Two teams; attackers (blue) and defenders (red). Set up as shown. Attackers with the balls.
How to play: Play is initiated when two attackers bring the ball into play. Once ball is in play, defender can enter and close down the gap to win the ball. Attackers work together to try and score on the mini goal. When a goal is scored or the ball goes out of play, players rotate out; 2 new attackers and 1 new defender enter. Rotate to ensure everyone gets a chance at both roles.
Progression: Make it a competition. If attackers score, they get a point. Defenders can get two points if they win the ball and dribble across the defending teams end line.
CP's:
- Attackers should dribble when they have space and look to draw the defender in towards them.
- If the defender commits towards the player with the ball, the player with the should try to pass to their open teammate or take the defender on 1v1.
- Ball and players should not die when on the pitch (aka. should always be moving)
- Attackers should try to work as a team as much as possible.
What this works on:
- Recognizing moments when we should pass or dribble
- When we don't have the ball, getting open to receive a pass
- Spatial awareness; head up to see where the defenders are and teammates
- Proper passing and receiving techniques
- Confidence on the ball; ball mastery and control
Progression: 2v2

3v3 - Add a condition: How ever many passes players make before score, equals the number of goals (ie. 3 passes before scoring, equals 3 goals).
Remove condition for the last 3-5 minutes, allowing open play.
- Pass-in or dribble in
- Retreat past half after a goal is scored
- No corners or throw-ins
- Add conditions as needed
