Positional exercise (15 mins)
SET UP
Create a pitch 25 x 30m with a mini goal and two gates at one end.
Place extra balls at the end where the black player is positioned
Play 4 v 3.
HOW TO PLAY
The team of 4 (blue) score into the mini goal or by dribbling through either gate. The team of 3 (yellow), score by dribbling over the line they're attacking (can use coach/neutral for a one touch bounce pass). If the ball goes out of play the game restarts from the coach/neutral (black) who passes to the team of 4.
Change the defenders every 2 mins.
PROGRESSION
Add a 5-10m retreating line if needed.
PLAYER TASKS
- Diamond formation
- CM drops off, FB's get high
-GK movement between read cones vital to passing lanes, as well as how ball can be received.
- When you are in possession, can you split to make the pitch big?
- Can you receive facing forwards or bounce the ball to someone who can?
- Can you either come short or go long to create space to receive?
- If a team mate in wide channel drives inside can you move outside and vice versa?
- Are we able to dribble out and find gaps, to break first high line press?

Set Up
Use half of a field with a width long end zone after the half way line.
How to play
- Blue aim to play to players in the end zone (#7/11). GK must play to CB (#4, #5) to start with (use this time to make sure movement of team mates is good). GK can play longer into #2, #3 if/where needed.
- Black aim to win ball and score as quickly as possible
- Black defenders (locked in) in end zone.
- All football rules apply except no corners (start from GK)
Coaching points
- Can you miss out players to quickly switch the ball?
- Start high and wide to create room for CB
- Can you get on the ball facing forward? If not, can you link up with someone who can?
- Can #7 and #11 perform lateral/diagonal runs between blue/red lines, to create additional space/overload options for #2, #3?
