Warm up- Passing practice

Football problem- Improve possession with structured build up in the back third (with GK, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8)

Objective- Improve ball carrier options from supporting players- to play out of the back

1. Players in game positions as shown in diagram

2. Passing sequence to start with GK's (#1). One sequence to the right and one to the left side of the goal

3.Players to pass ball in logical order (1-10) while staying in their positions

4. Emphasis on quality, accuracy/precision and speed of pass. *Appreciation of passing*

5. Progress to following your pass with a run to the next position (ie:- #10 moves to position #3/4)

6. Gradually increase you running speed and start to check your run before receving the pass

7. Use different combinations to get the ball to the #9

Positioning practice

1. Two groups of 4 outfield players (blue and red)

2. Red players- #'s 2, 3, 4, 5 / Blue players #'s 7,9, 10, 11 /#6 Neutral player- plays for team in possession

3. The 2 goalkeepers are also neutral and play as targets or bounce players for each team in possession

4. Players to play in logical positions

5. Red teams keeper #1 to start with the ball and the team aim is to get the ball across to blue keeper #12

6. If the red team succeed the keeper #12 must pass/strike/throw the ball back across the area to keeper #1

7. If the blue team wins the ball they must pass the ball back to their keeper #13 and then start the game in possession, the red team now defending

Team tasks- Quick combinations, use the overload with N and GK's

Player tasks- Correct body position when receiving the ball, know your next move, scan for space, spatial awareness

Variation- Limited touches, points system for no. of passes, 7 passes to GK = 7 goals

Game Training

1. Two teams of 8 players, each consisting of a full defensive line (GK, 2, 3, 4, 5) and an attacking three (7, 9, 11)

2. Two grids approx. length of the full pitch leaving a end zone in between

3. Defense v Attack in each area, GK starting with the ball passing out to the defensive team

4. Can you get the ball to the free player to dribble across the line into the end zone

5. If the attacking team wins the ball can they score in the goals (1 attempt + rebounds)

6. Ball to restart with the GK

Game training progression

1. Now both areas are connected

2. The blue team starts to play out of the back, trying to get a player over the middle zone into the other area

3. The blues can use their attacking players (7, 9, 11) as bouncers, offside rule applies.

4. One of the red defenders (#3) rests next to the goal to allow for a 4v3 in attack for the blue team.

5. If the blue team lose possession in their defensive half the red team can score.

6. If the blue team score they start again with their goalkeeper. If they lose possession in the attacking half then the red team play out of the back with the actions switched. (1 blue defender to rest)

Team task- Create overload situations, quick forward passing and support for the player on the ball

Training game

1. 8v8, formation 1-4-3

2. Normal game rules apply, players can move all over the field

3. Pitch smaller than full size, can change depending on players ability

Team tasks- Defensively can the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 use the overload (5v3).

Get the 2 and 5 attacking and supporting the 7, 9, 11.

Combinations to play the 7 and 11 between the lines.

Defensively move the 7, 9, 11 untill the opportunity arises to play forward and support.

Player tasks- 2 and 5 to play high and wide, receive on the back foot and look to play forward.

3 and 4 to use the keeper to play out past the attacking pressure.

7 and 11, come to receive then spin out into the channels looking to get in behind. Encourage the 1v1 and 2v1 in wide areas.

9 to hold the ball up and attack the area late to score goals.
