Defensive Shape and transition in 431

Defensive Shape

  • Forward stays onside by other team's CB or our side of midfield
  • One attacking mid stops the ball
  • Outside backs pickup any outside mids making runs
  • Holding mid drops and picks up one of other teams mids
  • Our Centerbacks stay connected ( about 6 -8 ft apart, not parallel) and stay central
  • Other attacking mid picks up late runner or helps provide double team
  • When we win ball, outside backs push up to be options

Defending Free kick near our box

If other team gets a free kick near our 18 (goal box)

  • Keeper will decide on size of wall
  • If on a side or angle, two man wall positioned by keeper, 1 attacking mid and forward
  • If straight on in front of goal, three man wall positioned by keeper, both attacking mids and forward
  • all 4 defenders as near 18 line as possible, straight line to hold other team high
  • other attacking mid and holding mid mark players
  • We stay between attackers and our goal (goal side)
  • On the kick, defenders must track runners too
  • On the kick, mid marks kicker and forward helps cover another attacker
  • Once ball goes wide or keeper saves, we move up again
  • This allows us to counter attack with more numbers
