Passing Patterns MF 4-3-3 (45 mins)
Final 3rd build up play patterns resulting in shot at goal
* Using just over half the pitch the Red team are set up in a 2-3-3 formation
* The drill always starts with the coach (acting a red team CB) passing the ball into midfield or FB
* The set up of the Red team is in a transitional shape by where they have just won the ball back and are looking to play forward quickly
* Red team looking to play the various passing patterns ending with a shot at goal
* Once the ball goes dead / a goal is scored the red team immediately retreat back to their starting positions (getting back into a defensive shape as if they have lost the ball in the final third)
* The 2 Blue team can defend the ball and look to play a pass into the target goals to score. First 2-3 phases of each pattern defend shadow play.
* The Red team are to have a maximum of 3 touches in order to move the ball quickly
Key movement is for the number 9 to drop deep into space. This initiates the passing patterns and movements we want to create.
Pattern 1
- Number 9 drops deep into space usually occupied by the number 10 and look to receive a pass off number 6 with his back to goal.
- Number 9 if option is available (based on information from team mates) should turn and runs with the ball directly straight towards goal.
- Numbers 7 & 11 should then look to make forwards runs looking to be slipped in outside the CB but inside the FB.
- Number 9 and either 7/11 ~(whoever doesnt receive the pass) and one of 8/10 should make direct forward runs into the box to receive a cross off thr receiver.
- Number 6 should stay deep to sweep and also one of 8/10 stays outside the penalty area for defensive solodity.
- Important we always have one midfield runner into attacking space (3rd man run)
Pattern 2
- Number 9 drops deep into space usually occupied by the number 10 to receive the ball off number 6 with his back to goal.
- Number 9 should look to lay a pass off to either 8/10.
- This should be the trigger for number 11/7 to make a direct run into the space that the number 9 has vacated to receive a through ball off number 8/10.
- Whoever makes the forward through ball should from 8/10 should stay back allowing the opposite player to make a forward run (3rd man run)
- Follow up runs from 9 and 7/11 should be made to support player who has received the through ball.
- Defensive shape off the ball as above.
Pattern 3
Number 9 drops deep into the position usually taken up by the number 10.
This is the trigger for the FB either 3/2 to make a forward run into space forward over the half way line to join in with play.
Once this happen the wide forward who is ball side shoudl stay out wide creating a 2v1 situation in the wide area with the FB on the ball.
Depnding on how far the FB carries the ball with determine what option he takes.
A triangle should be forward with the FB, CM 8/10and wide forward 7/11,
1. If FB passes to the inside CM and received back the opposite CM should make a forward run into space.
2. If the FB carries the ball and is able to pass into 7/11 with the back to goal up against opposite FB this shoudl be a trigger for 7/11, 9 and opposite CM to make forward runs into the box as once 2/3 receive the pass back off 7/11 a cross into the box will be made.
* Walk through patterns to start and then full speed
* Also encourage players to make own decisions and play what they see
* Patterns are there to help build pictures of movements and pitch geography when we have the ball
