Through Balls: Front Smother (10 mins)

Organisation
  • GK takes up central supporting position just above the six. Coach gives shout to signal loss of possession and GK drops into position to defend goal
  • As GK arrives into set position (2-3 yd), coach plays weighted through ball towards wide gate. GK must smother ball before it reaches gate.  Service side begins as 'announced', then coach may play either side.

Key Areas of Focus

  • Here the focus is largely on the technical execution of the GK defending space from a realistic service
  • Efficient & explosive with first 2-3 steps.
  • GK should also be aware of distances and starting positions in their area. When could we start higher?
  • -> GK Self Awareness: 'What balls are you reaching consistently?' 'Where might you make a different decision?'

Through Balls: Front Smother (10 mins)

Organisation
  • GK takes up central supporting position around edge of six (defending space). S1/S2 play pass into feet of S3 from higher wide areas. As S3 receives, GK drops into position where they could effectively defend the goal.
  • As GK arrives in set pos, S3 plays through ball towards wide gate. GK must smother ball before it reaches gate.  Service side begins as 'announced', then coach may play either side.
  • Progression: S3 may play through ball or play to S1/S2 for a shot on goal.

  • GK should also be aware of distances and starting positions in their area.

Through Balls w/ Defender (15 mins)

Organisation

  • Coach plays one/two with central player (blue) who then becomes active defender
  • Coach plays to feet of S1/S2 or plays through ball in front of airbodies (though ball shown in grey)
  • *Progression: If coach takes forward touch, shot from distance becomes an option if defender does not pressure
Key Areas of Focus:

  • Same principles of decision making apply as previous exercise, but GK must now communicate with defender   ---> use of defender's name, instruction to show attacker wide or to end line & apply pressure on fwd touch
