Description

This practice is designed to improve my team's ability to defend when the opposition is close to our goal.

I want to improve my players' ability to prevent shots on goal by putting attackers with the ball under pressure when they are within shooting range.

Ideally, I would like my defenders to learn to delay their opponent in the first instance, and block the shot if they are unable to do this.

Passing Practice (15 mins)

Rules

4 defenders play in back half of 20 x 10m pitch, around the width of the 6-yard box.

They must prevent 3 midfieldersin front half from playing killer pass between them to the 9, who is playing inbehind the defenders and trying to receive the ball.

Red players must play two touches until defending players are allowed to move into forward zone to apply pressure.

Switch defenders and attackers every 2 minutes.

Progressions

- Closest defender can apply pressure to the ball carrier to prevent them playing forward.

- Passes can be lofted over defence to 9.

- Additional point to attackers if 9 can play back to midfielders straight away.

- Add target for defending players to play to (coach, goal or assistant)

Behaviours to encourage

Once allowed to, apply pressure immediately to the ball when you are the closest defender.

Cover by dropping in front of the 9 if you are away from the ball.

Intensity and pace of movement in defence/stay on toes.

Stay compact as a back 4.

Positioning Game (20 mins)

Rules

6 v 6 possession game with 4 v 2 in each half, set up as a back four against a front 2.

4 neutral bouncers are on the outside, two as targets at either end, two as wide players on the touchlines.

Scoring

1 point for playing the ball to your designated neutral target. That player then plays out to opposing team to restart play.

Progressions

- Limit to 2 touches (SU)

- Every second pass must be played forward (SU)

- Defensive half players can now step into attacking half to create an overload (but must return once possession is lost or a point is scored.)

Team Task

Place pressure on the ball carrier when they are close to our goal to prevent them playing the target.

Players Tasks

As the ball is travelling can youanticipate which player will receive it and arrive with physical pressure on their first touch?

When opponent takes a heavy touch or a slow pass can you step into the path of the ball and win possession with a tackle or intercept?

Once there is pressure on the ball can off ball defenders drop deeper to prevent a switch in the point of attack?

If possession is won, can we lookto play a quick forward pass to the neutral target before the BP can getorganised.

Can we put pressure on the ball carrier and delay them so they are forced to pass backwards away from our goal?

When you pressure the ball carrier, can you get into an angled "boxing" stance to prevent them from dribbling past you into space

Game Training (25 mins)

Rules

Red (attacking) team always restarts with ball from the 3. Their aim is to play the ball into the attacking third to try create scoring opportunities as quickly as possible.

Blue team must defend and score in the two small goals as quickly as possible when they win possession.

Wide players (7 & 11) are in their own wide crossing zone and cannot be pressed.

Progressions

- Wide channels removed and players can go anywhere

- Limit touches or time on the ball of wide players to prevent "sitting on ball".

- When ball is played into wide channel, full back can put pressure on wide attacker.

- Change numbers and remove one of the two red defenders to have a neutral "joker" if red team is too dominant.

Team Task

When the attacking team is within shooting range, put pressure on the ball carrier to delay or block a potential shot.

Player Tasks

Can we put pressure on the ball carrier and delay them so they are forced to pass backwards away from our goal?

When you pressure the ball carrier and they have the ball under control, decelerate before approaching to avoid being "caught square".

Once you have delayed your ball-carrying opponent, can you direct them wide or into the path of your covering defender?

As the ball is travelling can youanticipate which player will receive it and arrive with physical pressure on their first touch. Can you discourage this player from turning to face our goal?

When opponent takes a heavy touch or a slow pass can you step into the path of the ball and win possession with a tackle or intercept?

Once there is pressure on the ball can off ball defenders drop deeper to prevent a switch in the point of attack?

If the player closest to you is about to shoot can you stay in front of them to block the shot?

Training Game (25 mins)

Rules

8 v 7 +GK.

All rules are as they are in a full game, except when ball goes out over either endline play resumes with goalkeeper for blues or 3 for reds.

Progressions

- Change numbers and remove one of the two red defenders to have a neutral "joker" if red team is too dominant.

- Cut off corners at end blue team is attacking to prevent 'missing winger effect'.

- Add corners for red attacking team.

- Add offside line to make more realistic if defence are sitting too deep.

- Make pitch narrower/shorter to reduce space to play.

Observe/Assess

Once the ball is in a shooting position, do players close down attacker and prevent shot on goal.

Do defenders delay attackers and shepherd them into an area they want the attacker to go, or do they dive in and provide attacker opportunity to go forward?

What instructions do teammates give to the on ball defender?

Is our defensive shape compact or do we provide open lanes to goal by staying too wide when deep in defence?
