Setup:
Pitch is set up in the middle of the pitch to keep the drill game realistic for the players.
Cones set up either side of the centre circle and ending halfway between the 18 yard box and the half way line.
1 ball, 2 end zone players in yellow bibs (in a game this would be a centre half), 4 red bibs and 3 blue bibs.
Challenge:
Defend a MDF 3 against a MDF 4.
If team intercept the ball they get a point for returning the ball back to the coach.
Key Coaching Points:
1. Prevent forward penetrating passes!
2. Midfield must remain organized and attempt not to cross each other.
3. The closest midfielder should apply pressure immediately on the ball without over committing to reduce options of the player in possession to pass forward.
4. The other two defenders take up good supporting positions in relation to the pressing player to block passes and provide cover.
5. As the ball is passed laterally the players need to communicate and maintain pressure on the ball. This will involve switching the pressing defender.
6. Consideration should be given when the ball is played wide to whether to force outside to the touchline or inside into the other defenders whilst still preventing a forward pass as the priority.
7. When the ball is with a wide target player the defending unit must slide together to remain compact and block any passing channels.
8. Communication is key.
