Warm-Up

Duration: 15mins

Warm-Up:

On entry, I allow the guys to pass to each other until it's time to start training

Once all players have arrived, we go into first warm-up as shown. I gather the players in a line from side line to side line with calls for sprints, and high pace strides.

Take time to Stretch as a group and get all players to call each stretch to allow for people to get outside themselves. Allow players to do any specific stretch's if needed.

Sprints:

These are called by me, I normally call on players to watch their footing so no sliding allowed as it slows the player down to be doing so. Example calls are the following: Cones are numbered 1-4 as shown above e.g. 1, 2, 1 followed by 2,1, 3 and 1, 2, 3, 4 and 4, 3, 2, 1 and to finish on 1, 2, 1 , 4 straight out.

Another stretch and water before we go into the next session.

Cardio and Possession Play

Duration: 15-20mins

Cardio:

This is maintained by jogging around the poles and on my whistle the front player sprints to the back of the group while the group maintains a slow jog.

I do a few goes for each player to ensure they have had a blow out before moving into possession game.

Possession Game:

Each team of four need to get five passes in a row whilst being pressured by two opposing players, once complete they pass across to the other side.

The middle get out of the middle by dispossessing the football, in which case the team that loses the ball goes to the middle and so forth.

Build-Up Play Transition to Attack (20 mins)

Duration: 15mins

Method:

  • Red Team are required to build-up play with blue team working off the ball to close down space and gain possession of the ball itself if possible and transition too score.
  • Red Team score by passing the ball through the cones to signify build-up play is complete
  • Coach and/or player positioned behind the cone to receive and pass ball from the red team between the cones to count as a goal
  • Coach and/or player will pass ball to the blue team for transition and this is done as soon as possible to ensure space has been utilized in the transition

Coaching Points:

  • Asking players to stay switched on throughout
  • Transition is a Tempo setter for both teams
  • With the number of players mimicking a match situation, I also decreased the pitch width dimension to bring up difficultly levels
  • Ensuring further comfort in possession i.e. keeping heads up off the ground as they become more and more accustomed to the layout which will only make for better decision making along with a quicker release on average of the football
  • Keeps defending a priority for all throughout, which for most coaches is paramount for any teams success, with particular attention given within the transition
  • Not only was it beneficial in relation to defending but also in support play and ensuring the player in position has an option at all times.

Warm-Up:

  • We Spent 20mins in all with the warm-up
  • Firstly we play a quick game of Rondo for 5mins
  • We move onto a light jog with stretching drills throughout
  • Short Sprint drill with cones numbered 1 > 5, players sprint what's called
  • Deep Stretch for a finish
Game:
  • GK with a set of goals on both sides for a 5-8 a-side game (Pitch size varies with numbers used)
