Description

Pre match session before a a tough match vs Kladno. 1 hour 30 minutes, a good intensity. Today’s session was not the best so I would like a better session in terms of quality and intensity from the players.

There will be a lot of shooting today and I am trying to put them in as many match realistic situations as possible. Again we shift from small areas to big spaces in a matter of seconds, just like in a match, and this will force the players to adapt. We start with a 4 line warm up with lots of little steps in between and stretches as well. The rondo will be a good way to start the session properly and keep it intense. The 2 boxes to goal exercise is a really good one and players get very confused when they get the ball in these situations, so hopefully they can learn a lot. Defensive shape, and how to attack as fast as possible, we are recreating a counter attacking opportunity, which we will hopefully have by pressing teams this season.

The match will be short and sharp, around 15 minutes, with the intention of forcing players to play forward which they did not do in Zwickau. Let’s see how it goes and hopefully a better session then today and we can go with some positive momentum to Kladno.

4 team bago with zones

Part of the warm up but an activity that must have the ball moving fast and players doing it properly.

Rules:

Set up is 4 boxes with 4 teams. 3 of the boxes are occupied while the 4th team always sends one man to press the ball. 4 teams of 5 players in a 12x12 pitch area, maybe a bit bigger if needed.

Yellow team must try and get the ball outside of the box, in any way possible. It does not matter if they just clear it, or pass it to another team.

5 passes and then the blue team can choose which team they pass it to. The team without possession must make sure that an "L" shape is created with the 3 boxes, and the team with the ball must be in the middle of it.

For example, if black gets the ball, red must move to the bottom right box to ensure that black is the middle team with the ball. This keeps players alert and makes them think a bit too.

To keep it intense and fast, the coach should have a pile of footballs with them at all times, so that they can play it in whenever is needed. Rotate the pressing team every 2 minutes and make sure they count how many times they clear the ball, so that the teams can compete against each other!

Coaching:

Not a crazy amount to coach, it is a normal bago with more thinking and decision to make. Make sure that the players are shifting and not being lazy.

Just let them get used to the session and being on the ball and then the other activities will be more intense and fast.

Possession to goal transition

Drill that promotes fast attacks and counter attacking skills.

Rules:

1 box (either left or right) will start with the ball and have to complete a certain amount of passes. It is a normal possession activity with either 1 or 2 jokers. 4v4 or 5v5 depending on the amount of players we have, and the space must also be made according to that as well.

Once 1 team have completed 10 passes they then pass to the same colour team to start the attack. So blue passes to blue and red to red. They try to score as fast as possible. Once the other box has made 10 passes, the other box can start to leave their area and call for the ball.

5 minute rounds then do some coaching and explain different things depending on how they are doing.

Coaching:

Attacking as fast as possible and not allowing the defensive team to return to their shape.

Not attacking in the same line which we seem to do a lot. Making overlapping runs, runs in between and in behind to make life difficult.

The first pass is very important to start the attack, where do we pass and how can we create a goal scoring opportunity straight away for the other team?

Watch for offside and making sure that the timing of our runs are correct. The players will go from a small area to a big area, how can they adjust and be effective in both and score goals?

4v2 box fast finishing

An activity to build the players confidence in front of the goal.

Rules:

Players are in groups of 4 on the poles as shown above. They play a pass to the right or left side and then try to score as fast as possible. There are 2 defenders who are working together to try and block passing lanes and recover the ball. If they get the ball, they try to score in the mini goals on the edge of the box as fast as possible.

Make sure that they are using both sides and rotating positions so that everybody crosses and finishes on goal too.

Players must try to finish with 1 touch, in a match you do not have enough time to take 2 or 3 touches to shoot, so try to promote positive habits.

Coaching:

When I did this u19, they all ran in a straight line at first and nobody was at the edge of the box at first. Try to let the players figure it out themselves, but I think a similar thing will happen here.

Making different runs to near post, far post and the edge of the penalty spot are extremely important to confuse the defenders and drags them out of position.

The delivery of the ball must be in the danger zone, in between the goal keeper and defender where they both do not know who should get it. Then our attackers have the perfect opportunity to score.

This is what we struggled with most last season, so I will start doing activities like this a lot earlier in this season, as I think we will have a similar problem with Kabele and Mesi, Korcak, Kubat and all these types of players.

Narrow pitch 5v5 half

5v5 match with a very narrow pitch.

Rules:

Same as yesterdays session, split into 4 different teams with strong against strong. They will play for 2 minutes and then swap. The footballs start with the goalkeepers and whenever the ball goes out, it will start from them too.

Simple set up and the pitch area is next to the mini box, all the way until the half way line.

Coaching:

The reason for this pitch length and width is to encourage the players to always play forward. There is no point in passing back to the goal keeper or centre backs when the pitch is set up like this.

Force the players to be brave on the ball and find ways to either get around, over or through the opponents team.

Through passes are also extremely successful in this pitch because it is long and there is space behind the defenders, but let the players figure this out themselves at first.

If players are struggling to play through, add a joker so that there is always a free man with the ball. But otherwise this is a great practice on how to play out from the back when you are being pressed in a small area.

With the u17s last year, this worked. But if needed, we can make the pitch a little bit wider if the boys are struggling, but only if it looks absolutely terrible and nobody is creating any goal chances.
