Week 1 - Defending Principles - Delay and Deny
Delay and deny is forcing the in-possession attacker to slow down their action (dribble? pass? etc) so your defending teammates can recover into position. This is important as we want to defend with as many numbers as possible
Who: all players must delay and deny on the pitch - a good rule: the closest player must close down the ball
What: slowing down in-possession attacker so your teammates can recover into position or double up on player
Where: anywhere on the pitch
When: opposition are in-possession of the ball and looking to play forwards
Why: to give us the best chance of not conceding a goal, through more defending numbers
How: body shape to force backwards or onto weaker side, force mistakes, not allow attacker to play forwards

2v1 in channels with a recovering defender - this is why we delay and deny - allowing teammates to recover into position to defend with extra players - MUST explain this to players so they understand WHY we delay and deny
Same rules/concept as the previous activity, but add a recovering defender that starts behind the blue attacker
Coaches may adapt the numbers and play 3v2, 2v1, even 2v2 depending on numbers of the group. Adapt the depth/width of the channels to suit players needs.

Wave practice - focus on the defending team
Use the entire group and repeat multiple teams, giving coaching to defending team ONLY
Team in-possession score into the goal - use goalkeepers or first time finish with no keepers
Team out-of-possession DENY opponents using principles that you have coached in the previous two activities - do they work in an opposed random game?
Transition from att to def once ball is dead (scoring goal or ball being cleared)
Steps demonstrated in the graphic:
1) Reds start with ball and play 1v1
2) Add attacker to blue and play 2v1
3) Add two attackers to red and play 2v3
And keep adding 2 to the team that has just defended and now attacking in the next phase
Eg, 4v3, 4v5, 6v5 until numbers run out
Must be patient with this activity as its challenging - can we better the defending after each attempt?
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Even sided game - can be played with or without GKs
Out-of-possession team (red) must lock into the zone - coaches can be creative and choose zone shape and size - square? semi circle? triangle etc
In-possession team (blue) must play the ball INTO the zone and score - once the ball is played into the zone at any point, reds can break out and defend anywhere they like
When red win the ball, blue must retreat into their zone as soon as possible - allow blues to delay attacker whilst teammates retreat into zone - this is our success and focus
Focus on same principles demonstrated in the previous activities only - delay and deny!
Coaches will need to adapt the game depending on their group size and ability:
Allow one red defender out of the zone at a time?
Increase/decrease the size of the zone to get delay and deny outcomes

Delay and deny 1v1 channels
Blue attacker aim to dribble past the red defender and stop the ball on the white line, red defender attempts to win the ball and burst into space in behind the blue attacker, stopping the ball on the red line
Red defender plays the ball into blue attackers feet, blue attacker attempts to dribble past the red defender who is delaying and showing the attacker onto their weaker side, forcing a mistake. The focus should be with RED DEFENDER ONLY. No coaching for the blue! Focus on the defending principles only. Swap over the player roles when suited
Deny attacker by jockeying (allowing teammate to make a recovery run - coaches must demonstrate jockey skill)
Focus on the distance between defender and the ball - two or three arm lengths away
Use of body shape, showing onto weak foot, delay the attacker
