Explanation
Size of area: 10x10m Sq inside a 15x15m outer square.
10 players in the session, 6v4
The team of 4 (blue) plays in the smaller square against two of the opposition (red). The other four (red) players are in the larger square and cannot go into the smaller square.
The coach passes to the team of four who must retain possession from the two pressing players. They score a point for every three passes.
Once the team of two win the ball they must pass the ball to the outside players.
To score a point they must string together a pass series from one outside player to another by combining with at least one central player.
Team Task:
How quickly can we press the opposition and regain possession?
Player Tasks / Actions
- Red players to press the blue players immediately.
- One red player to press the ball carrier immediately and show only one way.
- Second blue player to try and cut off the passing option, close down the space.
- Once the blue players have won the ball apply a one / three press. One player press the ball carrier and the remaining three cut off the passing lanes (3). How quickly can the regain possession.
Cues (To assist Perception, Decision, Execution)
- Body position and shape. Can you show ball carrier only one way.
- Approach the ball carrier quickly, close down the space and then slow down.
- Teammates need to move quickly to cut off passing options.

Explanation
Size of area: Half Pitch
Play to begin with goalkeeper (blue). Free pass out to the defender on the edge of box.
Opposition (red) to immediately press high up the pitch and regain possession as quickly as possible. Score in the main goal.
Blue to score in either of the two goals.
Re-start play with the goalkeeper once a goal is scored or play breaks down.
Team Task:
Press the opposition quickly to regain possession and create a scoring opportunity.
Player Tasks / Actions
- 1st attacker (#9) to immediately press the ball carrier on the edge of the box.
- 2nd attacker (#7 or #10) to move into a position for a pass infield across the box. Be ready to immediately press the ball carrier.
- Winger (#11 or #7) to move into a wide area to prevent the full back moving forward into that space or to intercept a pass out to the wing.
- Midfield players (#6, #8 & #10) must be aware and ready to shift position to intercept a pass from the back into midfield.
Cues
- Can you close the space to the ball carrier quickly?
- Can you force them to play in one direction?
- Don't rush the tackle, force the ball carrier to make a decision.
- Can you apply a One - Three press? One player pressures the ball carrier and the other three closest players cover the passing options.
- Are you applying pressure by covering the passing options off the ball.

Instructions: Place cones to identify starting positions for players. Players are to follow their passes. Two practices, one on the left & one on the right.
Explanation
Player #1 starts with the ball. #1 plays #2. Player #2 is pressed by opponent (passively) and is forced to make a decision to pass left or right to player(s) #3. Player #3 plays the other #3, who plays #4 and #5. #5 dribbles the ball to position #1 and starts from the other side.
