Defending in own half with a back four and twin midfield screen: Function into SSG
FAW B licence final assessment session

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
1 - Nearest Screen presses the ball. Shows inside if possible - into supporting screen. How? Fast then slow upon approach, bend knees, body shape forcing inside pitch, not allowing pass down the outside, touch tight if possible
2 - Second Screen shuffles across and drops deeper than First Screen. Preventing split pass forwards into striker. Checking Shoulder/Scanning to see where opposition Strikers are. In Between Ball and Man.
3 - CB's can get tight. Nearest CB - First Screen is blocking Pass down the outside, so CB can mark inside Shoulder. Furthest CB, Second Screen is blocking inside pass, Other CB can mark's other CF'S on the inside?
4 - If ball is then played to opposite CM - Second Screen becomes first screen and shuffles across then presses the ball - showing inside if possible. First screen then becomes second screen so must drop deeper and shuffle across to prevent split forward pass into strikers feet. CB's adjust their positions accordingly.
5 - What If? - Screen can't get across and show inside? - Screen will show outside if they can't get across and show inside, Nearest CB MUST get touch tight and can mark INSIDE?? shoulder hoping to nick the ball if possible or force ST back. Furthest CB adjust accordingly (CHECK AGAIN WHICH SIDE)
6 - Communication - This is vital. If Screens aren't in the right place then CB's can see the whole picture, so they need to talk to the screens (right shoulder, left shoulder, drop, squeeze).

Organisation:
Call in players and bring in the additional players. Explain the game quickly.
- REDS formation is 4-2-1-1 (would be 4-2-3-1) * Do I need to give information straight away to the REDS full backs as they weren't part of the function???
- BLUES formation is 2-4-2 (would be 4-4-2)
- Pitch as shown and is tapered off, the area tapered off would be where the BLUE full backs would be and the REDS wingers.
Information for REDS:
-Number 10 and Striker, we defend from the front but allow play to happen. LOCK IN PLAYERS ONE SIDE.
-8 seconds to score
-Full backs come into function and play as you see fit.
Information for Blues
-Front 2 to stay right up against the centre backs until told otherwise.
-Once condition introduced, get them to get the ball wide
CONDITIONS:
REDS to play forward / direct when in possession, manage a countdown (8 secs) * Call the countdown**
BLUES to begin with are managed to play through the number 9 and no10 before they can score. Need to ensure that No9 and No10 stay high to create realism.
Foucs to begin with is on the twin screen and them trying to stop the ball into the number 9 and 10 of the reds. Detail needs to be given to the twin screen of when, how, what, who and what if?
Progression 1 -
REDs stay in same formation 4-2-1-1
BLUES change though to a 2-4-1-1. BLUES now to be managed that they can only score if it goes through the number 10.
Look to work with the twin screen and CB's on how to deal with the number 10.
Do they step in and come with him?
When do they pass him on?
How's thiss affect everyone else in the units.
Progression 2 -
Manage the Blues that they need to play through their wide players. 3 goals for a goal scored from a cross.
Coach the FB's when to press the wingers and how. Again work with the unit of when this happens.
Whats ifs??
What if winger is too deep for the full back to come? – Wait until he comes over half way then go interact – show line
What if centre mids go play in the half space looking to drag the twin screen out?
What if ball does split the screens? (likely to happen in all games), can i coach the screen to look to pinch from the front aslong as CB are tight to their strikers?
Do i need to affect the keeper at times also??
Remember to effect the individual and the unit - players on the ball / around the ball / away from the ball

Organisation:
TIMINGS:
1-6/7 mins – Play as stated to begin with – 2 up front
7-12 mins – 4-2-1-1
14-15 – Game starts.
15/30 - SSG
Function is set out in the shaded
Function: 12 Players
- 12 players needed: 6 on blue team (attacking) 6 on red team (defending, GK,2-2-1)
- Lots of balls by blue CB's
- Ensure balls are recycled. (Ask other coaches to help) Same in transition.
Instructions to Players – RULES FOR THE FUNCTION
-Play starts with a CB, who passes into the CM
-Attacking CM’S look to play forward and support, don’t want you getting past the strikers.
-Defending CM’S can’t press until attacking CM has a touch
-CB to stay on their cones.
-CB can be used to play back to but have 2 TOUCHES to get ball back in QUICKLY
-2 Strikers stay up against the Centre backs
-Twin screens to limit balls to strikers.
-Attacking team look to get a shot off on goal
-Defending team look to play into the red Striker.
-Play always starts with the CB but not until everyone is back in their starting position.
Coaching the RED team to prevent goals and limit chances. COACH the TWIN SCREENS to limit balls into the striker’s feet.
TWIN SCREENS:
1.BREAK PASSING LINES
2.PRESS BALL AND COVER – DISTANCES APART
3.LOOK OVER SHOULDER CONSTANTLY TO SEE WHERE STRIEKRS ARE
Objective:
- Can the RED CM's prevent the ball from getting to the BLUE CF's – Work on twin screen immediately, one press, one covers and blocks passing lanes.
- Can RED CB's mark BLUE CF'S to stop shots on goal – be tight and goal side
- If attacking team get past screen and into attackers feet – TWIN SCREEN LOOK TO PINCH FROM THE FRONT
- If attacking team mids go past creating a 3v2 – CB to narrows up and show down the line if possible, other CB covering
What problems / progressions can the BLUE team create for the RED team to solve?
- Can the BLUE CM's pass the ball to a BLUE CF?
- Can the BLUE CM's combine with a CB to go 'around' the RED CM's and pass the ball to the BLUE CF?
6-7 mins in :
- Allow a BLUE CF to come and play as a number 10 as the ball is played in from a CB. Look to get inbetween the screens?
HOW TO DEAL WITH NUMBER 10 DROPPING IN:
-Inbetween Units – CB to come with him whilst other cb MUST squeeze with him
-In line with the CM’s or closer to CM than CB – nearest CM to ball closes ball down, other comes across and a little narrow to mark number 10. Communication!! – Stop and ask the question “what can help your cm here??”
-Units to squeeze close to not leave GAP for number 10 to play in.
***'Coach the individual and the unit' ****
- Provide coaching detail for each player and ensure they are all effected
Defensive key points:
- Pressure on the ball: where; how; when; who?
- Communication
- Angles and distances of support
- Compact and narrow shape
- Tracking runners
- Decision making
Coaching process:
- Observe the play
- Diagnose the problem
- Recreate the situation
- Provide feedback (and provide demonstration if needed)
- Rehearsal of performance
- Play live
