Description

In Week 5 of the foundation phase programme we look to build on the last couple of weeks by introducing small possession games to encourage keeping the ball. Ball mastery is still present in the warm up to improve touch and control followed by a simple possession exercise and we finish the session with a small sided game, putting these skills into practice. Ensure the session flows with the other sessions to ensure players understand what we are looking to achieve in this session.

Ball Mastery (15 mins)

Session Organisation:

  • Place mannequin central to 4 flat markers each 8-10yards away.

  • Spread players out equally on each pf  the 4 flat markers.
  • Each player requires a ball each. 

Instructions:

  • One set of players will begin the practice, in this case the 2 orange teams.
  • One player from each team will dribble out to the mannequin, beating the mannequin and taking the ball to the right.
  • On completion, The white team will repeat the process, dribbling into the mannequin and taking the ball to the right.
  • Players will then join the opposite line and repeat the practice.
  • Allow 2 mins on both left foot and right foot, exiting both sides of the mannequin.

Coaching Points (in possession)

  • Close control on approach, look sharp.

  • Timing of the skill. Don't be too close/far away from the mannequin.
  • Disguise on the skill.

Possession (20 mins)

Session Organisation:

  • 30x20 yard area, split into equal thirds.
  • 3 teams of 4.
  • The end thirds work together to keep possession of the ball.
  • The defending team will stay in the middle third to begin with.
Instructions: 

  • 2 teams will attempt to keep possession from the defending team.
  • One player from the defending area can come into the attackers area to try and win possession back.
  • After 3 passes in the area, the team may switch the ball to the other third if possible.
  • A different defender will come out the defensive line to press whilst the previous will drop back.
  • If the defenders win the ball they can find the opposite team with the ball and take the attacking teams position. The team that lost possession will drop in to defend.
  • Continue for a set period of time, every time the ball is switch the attackers earn 5 points.

Coaching Points (in possession):

  • Make use of the space and overload in the area.
  • Quality of pass - first time, strong firm passes.
  • Move the ball to disorganise the defensive unit.   

Coaching Points (out of possession):

  • Stay compact and don't allow attackers to play penetrative passes.
  • Communication to keep the distances small between on another.
  • Shuffle as a unit when the attackers switch the ball.

Creative midfielders

Session Organisation:

  • 30x20 yard area.
  • 2 mini goals in the centre of the pitch back to back.
  • A small out of bounds areas 5x5 yards around the goals.
  • 4v4 in the centre. 

Instructions:

  • Attackers must attempt to score in the mini goals whilst defenders try to win the ball.
  • If defenders win the ball then they transition into attack quickly.
  • Defenders or attackers are not allowed in the out of bounds zone.
  • The furthest goal away is worth 2 points whilst the nearest to the ball is worth 1 point. 

Coaching Points:

  • Be creative on the ball. Whether this is through a pass or a skill.
  • Switch the play, can we go over the mini goals and head/volley in the goal.
  • Crisp quick passing is crucial to create space to score.
  • Clever double movements off the ball to score.
