Jordi Cruyff CV Masterclass
The normal Barcelona line up under Jordi's father Johan Cruyff was based around a 4-3-3.
They changed to a 3-4-3 system when the opposition played 2 forward's so that they could maintain numerical superiority.
This system was also used to prevent Barcelona having to cover for the oppositions 2 forward's with 4 defenders. Johan Cruyff believed that this wasted players and they should be used further upfield.
Out of Possession the 3 defenders were to close down the spaces around the 2 opposition forwards, and always keep the overload advantage.
In this 3-4-3 the passing options for players in possession were always excellent with this formation from the availability of teammates and the angles they could offer.
If one of the defenders advances in possession then the No 6/Pivot/Defensive Midfielder would drop in to maintain the overload in the defence and the rest of the team adjusts to these movements.
