This is the first part of the warm up.

It has exercises that are related to the session. It involves the goalkeepers using various techniques to block the ball ( dive at feet, spread/block, stay and set for shot).

Set up - Organisation:

  • Set up the drills as shown above.
  • There are four stations one for each goalkeeper.
  • The drill is set up with a cone and two footballs(1 and 2 ) at each station.

 Exercise 1:

  • The GK starts at A and moves forward to ball 1 performing a block/K barrier.
  • The GK then moves backwards around cone A and advances to ball 2 performing a K barrier.
  • Repeat for 8 reps.

Exercise 2:

  • The GK sits in between balls 1 and 2 and moves side to side placing hands on each ball as if he-she is smothering it.
  •  This helps warm up for exercise 3.

 Exercise 3:

  • The GK starts at A and moves to ball 1 leading with the hands and going to ground to smother the ball.
  • The GK then moves backwards around cone A and advances to ball 2 again smothering the ball.
  • Repeat for 8 repetitions.

Exercise 4:

  • The coach can now make the session unpredictable by giving each technique a number.
  • So number 1 is block/K barrier, 2 is smother the ball and 3 is set and defend the goal.
  • The coach calls a number and the keeper performs the appropriate exercise as done previously.
  • If the coach calls 3 (defend) the keeper sets centrally for service from the coach and makes the appropriate save.

Key points:

  • Short sharp footwork.
  • Hands head and shoulders forward.
  • Closing the space towards ball quickly.
  • Balance.
  • Proper technique on each exercise.
Focus here is on correct movement and the keepers becoming comfortable with the various techniques used in a 1 v 1 or through ball situation. It allows the keepers the opportunity to get these techniques correct without the pressure of players being involved  yet.

Organisation of session:

  • Set exercise up as shown above with 2 discs approximately 2 yards apart.
  • The GK starting point A is 4 yards back from the gate.
  • The GK starts at cone A and plays a pass to server 1.
  • The server shoots first time at the gate.
  • The GK closes the space as quickly as possible and blocks the shot using a spread or block technique.
  • This is performed 5 times and then the following is added to progress the drill.

Progression:

  • Once the shot is blocked server 2 rolls the ball with his hand before striking the ball.
  • The GK attempts to block the ball with his hands as it is rolled or before the server strikes the ball.

Organisation of session:

  • Set up the exercises above varying the distances to suit the keepers specific to the session.
  • The gates are 3 yards wide.
The session:
  • The goalkeeper sets at starting point A to receive a shot centrally from the goalkeeper coach and makes the appropriate catch/save using the varying techniques.
  • After this save server 1 shoots or rolls the ball at gate 1 and the keeper must advance to smother the ball before it passes through the gate.
  • The keeper returns to A and receives a second volley from the GK coach.
  • After this save server 2 shoots or rolls the ball towards gate 2 and again the keeper advances to smother the ball before it passes through gate 2.

Progression:

  • The coach calls either gate 1 or 2 after the service for the GK to advance and smother the ball.
  • To make the drill more unpredictable the coach asks one of the servers to serve the ball centrally and shoots at a gate without calling a number and the keeper must react to the ball.

Key Points:

1. Movement.

2. Handling.

3. Reactions.

4. Speed.

5. Proper technique.

6. Decision making.
