Brams United Winter RDP Week 1 Pt2 (20 mins)

In Possession: Quick & Direct Play

Game-Related Practise: Quick and Direct Play

This practice encourages your players to be positive in possession and run with the ball at speed so the defender cannot recover in time.

Set-Up

  • 20 mins
  • 6 players
  • 3 balls
  • 6 bibs
  • 8 cones
  • 30 x 25 area

Set up the practice as seen in the above image. The first player dribbles unopposed into the end zone and can score in either goal.

After taking their shot, the player must turn and defend against the first player from the opposite group. The shot triggers the 2nd player to start, they must attempt to cross into the end zone and score into either goal.

After their shot, the blue player turns to defend, and the first red player collects their ball and joins the end of their queue. The sequence continues.

Key Coaching Points

    Quick and Direct Play

  • Attackers should take a positive first touch forward and run with the ball at speed. Players should look positive in possession and cross the zone line before the defender recovers.

    Running with the Ball

  • To attack at speed, the attacker should drive with their laces, pointing their toe to the floor and taking big touches into the space in front. They must ensure the ball is at a safe distance should they need to protect and shield the ball.

    Protecting the Ball

  • If the defender gets alongside, the attacker should use their arm and body to protect the ball (hand-hip-hide) and attempt to dribble and shoot using the safe side.
