Overlap Basic Situation
Objective:
Using overlap in a 2v1 to finish.
How it works:
- 2v1. Defender start behind halfway line.
- Attacking team score in the goal, defender dribble past the green gate to score.
- Once 1st attacker dribbles in, 2nd attacker runs past blue gate and does an overlap run to the other side. Defender can go past halfway line to engage.
- Rotation once out of play: 1st attacker -> 2nd attacker -> defender -> back of queue.
Progression:
- Underlap (up).
- Bring in an extra defender (up).
- 1st attacker engage defender in 1v1.
- Small touches, change direction with ball mastery, change speed.
- If support attacker draws defender away, then drive.
- If defender doesn't follow support attacker, then lure defender towards you then pass.
- 2nd attacker run to support.
- Get beyond in a goal scoring position.
- Take defender away with supporting run.

1v1 Competition (20 mins)
Objective:
Finish with 1v1 skills.
How it works:
- Set up a few grids, 1v1 competition, 3 minute rounds. Winner goes up, non-winner stays in same grid.
- Defender pass ball to attacker , 1 v 1 is live.
- Players attack the gate in front of them.
- 1 point = dribble or pass through red gate.
- Out of bound or score = restart.
Progression:
- Put in time limit (up).
- Weak foot score = extra point (up).
Coaching Points:
- Small touches approach defender to deny thinking time.
- Ball mastery to change direction - sell move by shoulder drop, pay attention to weight on standing foot to push off to next move.
- Once gone past defender, change speed to drive.
- Encourage confidence in driving and to use ball mastery skills.
- Keep ball moving.

Y Drill (20 mins)
Objective:
Repetition of passing and first touch habits.
How it works:
- 1 player per mannequin, the rest cue behind position A. Players follow their pass.
- Passing pattern:
- A -> B -> C or D, then dribble to position A.
- A -> B -> A -> C or D, then dribble to position A.
- A -> B -> C or D -> B -> C or D, then dribble to position A.
- A -> B -> A -> C or D -> B -> C or D, then dribble to position A.
Player in B ensures pass goes to opposite side from where they checked out.
Next player in position B ensures next pass goes to opposite side than previous rotation.
Coaching Points:
- Good ball speed when pass and receive.
- Check out.
- Half turn.
- Shoulder scan.
- Later touch to play forward.
- Front foot to bounce back.
- Good weight behind pass: side of foot, square hip, standing foot point to next player, low centre of gravity, step into pass.
