Defending Corners (15 mins)

Corner Defense- Zonal Marking

·      Each defender has a zone they are tasked with protecting with the ball is served in.

·      Each shaded area shows the area that each defender needs to win the ball at if it comes into their zone.

·      The goalkeeper needs to protect the 6-yard box area. Any ball that comes into that area, they need to come out and claim.

·      Practice serving multiple balls in for players to attack

Coaching Detail-

Communication

·      Communication is key for all players in defending the corner kick

·      The goalkeeper needs to be directing players where to go for the defense

·      Central player in the 3 on the 6-yard line needs to also be directing players

Ready Stance

·      Players need to be in a ready stance for the delivery of each kick

·      Players should be focused on the area they need to cover

Height and Distance

·      When clearing the ball, players need to have height and distance on their clearances

·      Ball should be cleared to the sides of the field and not down the middle

·      If possible, clear the ball to our man on the edge of the box to counterattack

Counterattack/Step up

·      Players should step out quickly when the ball is cleared for a counterattack

·      Players need to listen to the goalkeeper when he tells the team to step out on cleared balls

·      Counters needs to be done at speed and everyone should look to get involved in the counter.

Attacking Corner Play 1 (20 mins)

Attacking Corner- Signal 2 hands up from the kicker

  • Corner kick taker puts two hands up while going to the corner to signal which corner
  • Players will get into positions for kick
  • 1 player on the front post, 1 player on the goalie, 1 at the opposite edge of the box to collect a cross if it goes wide, 1 players at the top of the box, 2 players back for defense, and 3 players line up in a line in line with the PK spot near the edge of the box.
  • Kicker will have one hand up to signal the kick is happening, this is the cue for players to move
  • Front post player will run off the post for the short corner. They have two options, set the ball back at angle if the opponent runs with them or turn inside the 18 if there's no defender.
  • The player will set the ball back at an angle to the kicker toward the edge of the 18 yard box.
  • The kicker must serve the ball back post as a cross or a shot.
  • The three runners at the top of the box must run towards the kicker slightly and arch their runs around to go towards the back post.
  • Player on the goalie needs to try and shield the goalie as the kick is taken while going up for a header
  • Back post runner is there to head anything back into the danger area.
Coaching DetailDelivery of kick
  • Short pass must be delivered at pace and equally the set back needs to be with pace so the runner can receive the ball to deliver
  • Cross must be hit with pace and in the air toward the back post
  • Has to beat the first man when delivered
Runners arrival time
  • Runners need to arrive at their positions as the ball is reaching the back post
  • Runners can't stand and wait for the cross to reach them
Don't Foul
  • When moving for position, do not foul the defender
  • Players on the goalkeeper, just stand there, do not push into the goalkeeper or try to push the defender out of the way
Attack the ball
  • Attack the ball at pace
  • Aim headers towards corners of the goal or in the space that the goalkeeper is moving from

Defending Free Kicks (15 mins)

Defending Free Kick

Equipment- Balls, Cones, 2 small goals

  • Set up different areas around the goal to practice defending free kick situations
  • Based on position of the ball, have the goalkeeper set up a wall. Check with GK Coach if it's correct.
  • Players will then man mark all players in threatening positions.
  • The wall will not jump when defending the kick
  • If kick is floated into the 6-yard the keeper must come out to collect the ball or punch away
  • If the ball is floated into the 18-yard box and the keeper cant reach the ball then the defenders need to clear the ball with their heads
  • Players should look to clear the ball towards the Small goals set up at an angle.
Coaching DetailCommunication
  • Goalkeeper needs to be loud and demanding when setting the wall and organizing the rest of the team
  • Leader needs to take charge of making sure everyone else is marked up and no one is keeping players onsides
  • Goalkeeper needs to be loud when coming out for the ball or instructing his defenders to clear the ball
Height and distance

  • Never clear balls into the middle

Attacking Free Kicks (20 mins)

FUNCTION

  • This is a position-specific game that is played on a pitch that is 50m x 50m. There is a full-sized goal at one end, and four target mini-goals on the opposite end line, as shown. Four flat markers are also positioned across the pitch, five metres outside the penalty box.
  • The defending team, which defends the full-sized goal, is made up of a goalkeper, back four, midfield three and a striker. The attacking team, which attacks the big goal, is made up of two centre-backs, four midfielders and two strikers.
  • The game starts with a set-piece taken from flat marker #1, wide on the right. Once the set-piece has been taken, the game is live.
  • After that ball goes out of play, the game restarts with a set piece from marker #2, and so on as the game continues.
  • If the defending team manages to win possession, they attempt to score quickly in one of the target goals.
  • The attacking team is given eight balls with which to try to score, sstarting from each starting point twice.
  • Once the attacking team have had their eight balls, the attackers and defenders switch roles. The teams can play three rounds of attacking and defending each.

Progression

  • Progress the practice by changing the position of the flat markers, to give both teams opportunities to try different attacking deliveries.
Coaching Detail

ATTACKING WIDE FREE-KICKS

BLOCKER OFFSIDE

  • When taking a free-kick, the attacking team should always have at least one player who starts offside. This will place doubt in the mind of the defenders, who will be unsure of whether to mark this player or leave them offside.
  • In the scenario pictured in Diagram 2 above, the offside player (#10) is a blocker for the target player (#9) in the box. As the ball is being delivered, the offside player should start moving to an onside position and subtly block the player marking the target attacker. This will allow the target player space and a header at goal.

TWO ON THE BALL

  • Having two players over the ball for set-pieces makes it difficult for goalkeepers to set up their wall, as the ball may be inswinging or outswinging.
  • Creating this confusion can result in an easier route around the wall for the players to play the ball into the box, which may result in a flatter cross that makes it harder for the goalkeeper to claim.

EARLY JUMPS

  • The attackers should attempt to get off the ground early. Doing so will give them the opportunity to pin the opposition defender down and use them as leverage to gain more elevation on their jump. This should allow them to win aerial duels if the blocks are unsuccessful.
