Set the problem:
The red team have set up to try and stop opponents playing out from the back with red 9 & 10 splitting the CH's and the deep lying midfielder. The yellow CH's give depth and width with the FB's high and wide to create space/passing options for the GK. As red No 9 presses down the line of the ball the RSCH passes back to GK who then switches play to LSCH to create 2v1 overload on opposite side.
Solution:
encourage red No's 9 & 10 to work as a pivot to deal with the switch of play.
1/ red No 9 to press at high intensity with the trigger as the ball leaves the GK foot & arc his press to shut off the passing line to the GK and show him down the line
2/ The red No 9's press is catalyst for red 10 who drops down and screens the deep lying midfielder.
3/ If the yellow 6 has good movement and manages to bounce pass from opposite CH then the red 10 will press the ball with same technique and the red No 9 will then screen the yellow 6.

Set the problem:
yellow team are very expansive and make it difficult to lock them in on one side. Yellow No 6 drops onto 18 yd box to receive ball and pulls red No 8 out of his midfield unit with red 9 & 10 pressing down on CH's. Yellow FB's have pushed high and wide to effect the wide midfield player.
Yellow GK uses bounce pass with No 6 as trigger to play over the press, high and wide to FB.This tactic splits the red units and prevents them being organised and compact and also creates space if yellow team can win 1st ball.
Solution to the problem:
It is vital that when the GK plays the longer pass to FB that the red team recover at pace into a compact defensive shape as follows.
*Red 8 drops down centrally > red 6 shuffles across to screen yellow No 10 > red 11 drops in and narrow on same line as his CM players > red 10 recovers centrally into pocket in front of midfield unit & red 9 recovers centrally to allow him to be an outlet if reds win possession.
*emphasise importance of moving in relation to the ball as ball is played over the press with the distances between individuals/units/team staying same in/out of possession and especially on transition. My philosophy is to always press facing the opponents goal and we drop in set to press, try to ANTICIPATE and not react too late.

conditions:
phase one 10 mins- set the scene with play based on defensive shape from gk dead ball situations.
*
* yellow team limited to 2 touch with red team all in
* yellow GK starts play by passing to one of back 4 or deep lying midfield player.
* use wide channels as reference points for wide players and FB's with players on opposite side of play narrow and compact and at least in line with ball when out of possession.
* play freely for 2 mins then coach based on problem/solutions from previous drill.
coaching style: Q & A/ democratic
Phase 2: shape on transition - 15 mins
conditions
* play can start from either GK and distribution can be to any player.
* in open play encourage red team to press or drop as a team with the withdrawn striker dropping in at times to make a narrow & compact midfield unit of 5 with the No 9 dropping into hole in front.
* backwards pass can then be the trigger to press higher up pitch
keypoints:
* 9 & 10 can use the pivot to prevent switch and share the workload
* angle the press with a high intensity
* recover into a narrow & compact shape
* move in relation to the ball
* anticipate/ don't react too late

Organisation (20 mins)
In the 11v11 game both teams will play a 4-4-2 formation. I will coach the red team with yellow team set conditions as opponents.
*The drill x 15 mins will be set up as follows: Red team = back 4 as mannequins + midfield 4 & No 10 with lone striker No 9. Yellow team = back 4 + gk & defensive screen + No 10 with remaining players as mannequins.
*The numbers for the SSG will be: red team 2-4-1-1 + GK & yellow team 4-3-1 + GK
The pitch dimensions for the DRILL & SSG will be 70 x full width with wide channels marked out 5 yds in from each touch line to be used as reference points during session + red FB areas coned off for SSG
Set up:
*The drill starts with a yellow team goal kick with the yellow team aiming to play from the back to try and find there No 9 who then has 2 touches to score in an open goal. The drill then restarts from the yellow GK.
*The red team will be coached on the who/how/when/why & where to press in the final 1/3 to prevent the yellow team playing either through/around or over from the back. If red team win possession they have 8 seconds to score a goal.
**coaching style: guided discovery at first then autocratic to coach tactical points.
